Good News
Joan McCracken Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Something to begin with
That's easy said than done
You'll see me rolling home
But I don't understand why
Still there's nothing at all

Time is on my side
But we mustn't let our disappointment show
But I will, and you will go on

All I need is some good news (some good news)
All I need is some good news (just some good news)
To put me on my feet (to put me on my feet)
To put me at my ease (at my ease)
All I need is some good news (all I need is some good news)
All I need is some good news (some good news)
To put me at my ease (to put me at my ease)
All I need is some good news

All I need is some good news (just gimme me some good news)
All I need is some good news (some good news)
To put me at my ease (to put me at my ease)
To put me on my feet (on my feet, on my feet)
All I need is some good news (all I need is some good news)
All I need is some good news (all I need is some good news)
All I need is some good news

All I need is some good news (all I need is good news)
To put me on my ease (to put me at my ease)
To put me on my feet (on my feet, on my feet)
All I need is some good news (good news)
All I need is some good news (some good news)

All I need is some good news (good news)
All I need is some good news

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Joan McCracken's song "Good News" convey a sense of hopelessness and desperation, with the singer longing for something positive to happen in their life. The lines "Something to begin with/That's easy said than done" suggest that the singer is seeking a fresh start or a solution to their problems, but finding it difficult to do so. The repetition of "all I need is some good news" throughout the song emphasizes the singer's plea for something positive to happen in their life.

Despite acknowledging that "time is on my side," the singer feels disappointed and unable to shake off their negative feelings. They implore themselves and others to keep their disappointments hidden, but ultimately concede that they will continue on with their struggles. It's clear that the singer is looking for a glimmer of hope in the form of "good news" to put them at ease and back on their feet.

@hotmarriedgays

And with this, Joan McCracken walks off with the whole movie.

@kennethbrady

totally. what a TALENT.

@lizaelliott6862

Not surprising that she was my favorite person in the movie :)

@theOlLineRebel

Such a horrid shame she hardly had any roles and then died so young!

@JohnSmith-sq3lo

Yeah, she really did steal this entire movie. I almost wish it’d been longer so there could’ve been more scenes with her.

@SurferJoe1

You could not be more correct. I watch this film every time TCM airs it, just for this scene. Amazing and wonderful.

One of the best musical production numbers ever made! Joan is really great!

She sadly died in 1961, from a heart attack brought on by her diabetes.

@Caesar13ism

Agreed. So much about the number is great. The area is so small yet they're perfectly spaced, and when they go into that deep syncopation (beating on the bar stools!) it's just amazing.

@SkyBlue1031

It hardly ever gets better than this.  I could watch this a million times.
