You Should Know Me
Joe Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ladies and gentleman
I'd like to take y'all back
Back to the future
When we used to slow jam at the parties
So, fellas grab your lady, and take her to the dance floor
You already know

I remember when we had so much trust
And nobody couldn't become between us
Do you remember?
Now you listening to he said/she said
And they keep puttin' thoughts in your head all the time

Girl, your heart is filled with so much doubt
'Cause you think that I've been playing you out

Girl

[Chorus:]
You should know me (You should know me)
Know me by now (By now)
I would die before I hurt you
You should know me (You should know me)
Know me
And I will never let you down, oh

You believe that I've been getting down
With your friend when you're not around
Now, why would I do it, baby, baby?
I don't deny that there is some attraction
But they lie about my reactions
I could never, never hurt you, baby
Never, never, never

Girl, your heart is filled with so much doubt
'Cause you think that I've been fooling around

[Chorus]

If you could look inside of me
Before you start your third degree
You would know exactly how I feel
No one else can take your place
I love you more, more and more each day
Don't you let them take away this love that we have, baby
No, baby, no

[Chorus x2]

Why would I give you my credit card
If I really didn't love you, baby?
Why would I buy you a diamond ring
If I really didn't love you, baby?
If you wanna know
If you really, really, really, really want to know
Don't ask my neighbors
'Cause, baby, they don't know what they saying (You should know me)
All you gotta do is ask me, girl (Know me)
And I'll let you know (You should know me)

I will let you know (Know me)
Yes, I will

Overall Meaning

The song "You Should Know Me" by Joe is a slow jam that takes listeners back to the good old times when slow dancing at parties was a thing. Joe urges men to grab their ladies and take them to the dance floor. The lyrics of the song are about trust issues in a relationship. Joe reminisces about a time in their relationship when there was so much trust, and nobody could come between them. But now, the girl listens to he said/she said, and people keep putting thoughts in her head. She has so much doubt in her heart and doesn't believe that Joe is being faithful to her.

Joe tries to convince the girl in the chorus that she should believe him when he says he loves her and will never hurt her. He questions why he would buy her a diamond ring or give her his credit card if he didn't love her. He reassures her that he could never hurt her and urges her to ask him instead of the neighbors if she wants to know how he feels.

The song is a beautiful piece that speaks to the heart of anyone who has trust issues in a relationship. Many people can relate to the lyrics, and the slow jam tempo makes it a great song for slow dancing. Joe's vocals are smooth and capture the emotions behind the words perfectly, making it a classic R&B song.

Harmonies at 00:43. Killing it. One of the most priceless jams Joe has ever produced. I love this song. It's unfortunate that the song never got the airplay it deserved. A hidden gem that mostly only Joe's ardent fans would know about. Honestly, with all due respect, Joe produced the most beautiful songs during the time he was still with his girlfriend Michelle Williams. Most of his beautiful songs, she featured as a co-writer. She seems to have been an inspiration to him to come up with some of the most melodic masterpieces - as a team and obviously with Josh Thompson. Still love this guy's music.

@SJ1993Q

Which Michelle Williams are you referring to please?

@alimadalane9171

@Sophia James certainly not the destiny's child's one. This one was virtually unknown.
