DeRosa, Ruda, and Seefried were previously in a group known as Gods Child; and had released a handful of LPs under that moniker. In 1995, Gods Child had a national hit single, "Everybody's #1", which topped the Billboard Magazine "Modern Rock" and "Album Rock" categories simultaneously.
Seefried and Hamilton would go on to pen "Sleeping Pill" a song which was featured on a CD Sampler released by Album Network, a trade magazine. The song was credited to a band known as "The Amazing Adventures of Joe 90" — a pseudonym for the duo. The name was a send-up to the 1968 animated television series entitled Joe 90. However, their audience was not in on the joke, and repeatedly inquired about Joe 90. They eventually took on the name to avoid any further elaboration.
Drive
Joe 90 Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And yet nobody knows
Let's not forget to discuss
All of the freeloads
Here is the car you drive
The window is open wide
Many nice folks suggest
Time doesn't know
What its time for us all to know
I like a yellow shirt
And I like orange shades
I like your green suede shoes
And all the sweaters you made
Here is the car you drive
The window is open wide
Many nice folks suggest
That we go for a drive
Time doesn't know
What its time for us all to know
Escape from the crowd
Escape from the dark
Escape from East Berlin
Escape from the planet Earth
Escape from the Planet of the Apes
Here is the car you drive
The window is open wide
Many nice folks suggest
That we go for a drive
Time doesn't know
What its time for us all to know
We don't know nothing, nobody
No one at all
The opening lines of Joe 90's song "Drive" suggest that there is a bigger and more powerful something that nobody knows about, while also bringing attention to the issue of freeloaders. The next few lines then seemingly change the subject, focusing on the car that the listener drives and suggesting that they go for a drive. The lines "Time doesn't know / What its time for us all to know" perhaps suggests that there is something greater that we are all unaware of, and that time will eventually reveal it.
The next verse seems to be a list of things that the singer likes, from colors of clothing to homemade sweaters. However, these lines don't seem to have a direct link to the rest of the song or offer additional insight into the meaning of the lyrics. The following lines then reference escaping, first from the crowd and the dark, then more dramatically from East Berlin and the planet Earth, concluding with a reference to the science fiction film "Escape from the Planet of the Apes". These lines perhaps suggest a desire to escape from the mundane or the oppressive, and to break free from the limitations of reality.
The song concludes with a repetition of the earlier lines about driving and a final declaration that "We don't know nothing, nobody / No one at all". This may suggest a sense of existential uncertainty or disorientation, and a feeling that there is a vast unknown that we may never fully comprehend. Overall, the lyrics of "Drive" seem to touch on themes of power, freedom, uncertainty, and the search for meaning.
