His first album featured a recording of the Beatles' "With a Little Help from My Friends", which brought him to near-instant stardom. The song reached number one in the UK in 1968, became a staple of his many live shows (Woodstock and the Isle of Wight in 1969, the Party at the Palace in 2002) and was also known as the theme song for the late 1980s American TV series The Wonder Years. He continued his success with his second album, which included a second Beatles song: "She Came In Through the Bathroom Window". A hastily thrown together 1970 US tour led to the live double-album Mad Dogs & Englishmen, which featured an all-star band organized by Leon Russell. His 1974 recording of "You Are So Beautiful" reached number five in the US, and became his signature song. Cocker's best selling song was the US number one "Up Where We Belong", a duet with Jennifer Warnes that earned a 1983 Grammy Award. He released a total of 22 studio albums over a 43-year recording career.
In 1993, Cocker was nominated for the Brit Award for Best British Male. He was awarded a bronze Sheffield Legends plaque in his hometown in 2007, and received an OBE the following year for services to music. Cocker was ranked number 97 on Rolling Stone's 100 greatest singers list.

Don't Ever Go
Joe Cocker Lyrics

All my pictures seem to fade to black and white
I'm growing tired and time stands still before me
Frozen here on the ladder of my life
Too late to save myself from falling
I took a chance and changed your way of life
But you misread my meaning when I met you
Closed the door and left me blinded by the light
Although I search myself, it's always someone else I see
I'd just allow a fragment of your life to wander free
But losing everything is like the sun going down on me
I can't find the right romantic line
But see me once and see the way I feel
Don't discard me just because you think I mean you harm
But these cuts I have they need love to help them heal
The lyrics to the Joe Cocker song "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me" speak of a person who is tired of living in someone else's darkness. They can no longer find their way out of the black and white world their partner has created for them. They feel trapped, frozen on the ladder of life, unable to climb up or down. It's too late to save themselves from falling, as they took a chance and changed their partner's lifestyle, but were misunderstood. The door was closed on them, and they were left blinded by the light.
The person is pleading with their lover not to let the sun go down on them. They search within themselves but only find someone else looking back at them. They know they can't be everything to their lover, but they'd like to have a small part of them. Losing everything is like the sun going down on them. They can't find the right words to express their feelings, but they hope that their lover can see how they feel when they are together. They don't want to be discarded just because they may seem harmful. They need love to heal the cuts that they have been dealt in life.
Overall, the lyrics describe a person who is trapped in a world that they don't want to be in, who desires love and understanding from their partner, but who feels that they are being left in the dark. The song is emotional and speaks to the heart, describing a universal feeling that anyone who has ever felt trapped or misunderstood can relate to.

Oh oh
I thought I'd see you smile
When I walked in the door
Thought those arms of yours would be open wide
The way they were before
Why do you look at me
Like I'm some stranger now
Why do you pull away
When you used to hold me so tight
Don't you love me anymore
Have your learned to live your life without me
Don't you love me, anymore
When did the fire go out
Where did the feeling go
Did it slip away when I wasn't there
Baby now I've come home
I thought you'd want me babe
I was so sure you'd ask me to to stay
I thought you'd need this too
Guess it didn't work out that way
Don't you love me anymore
Have you learned to live your life without me
Don't you love me anymore
Darling
When did the fire go out
Where did the feeling go
Why do you pull away
When you used to hold me so close baby
Don't you love me anymore
Have your learned to live your life without me
Don't you love me anymore
Don't you love me anymore
Have your learned to live your life without me
