Begin The Beguine
Joe Loss & His Band Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When they begin the beguine
It brings back the sound of music so tender
It brings back a night of tropical splendor
It brings back a memory ever green

I'm with you once more under the stars
And down by the shore an orchestra's playing
And even the palms seem to be swaying
When they begin the beguine

To live it again is past all endeavor
Except when that tune clutches my heart
And there we are, swearing to love forever
And promising never, never to part

What moments divine, what rapture serene
Till clouds came along to disperse the joys we had tasted
And now when I hear people curse the chance that was wasted
I know but too well what they mean

So don't let them begin the beguine
Let the love that was once a fire remain an ember
Let it sleep like the dead desire I only remember
When they begin the beguine

Oh yes, let them begin the beguine, please make them play
Till the stars that were there before return above you
Till you whisper to me once more, "Darling, I love you"
Then we suddenly know what heaven we're in
When they begin the, begin the, begin the beguine

When they begin the, begin the, begin the beguine
When they begin the beguine

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Begin the Beguine convey a sense of nostalgia and longing for a past love. The song is about a person who is transported back to a memory of falling in love under the stars and by the shore where an orchestra is playing, creating a night of tropical splendor. The melody of the beguine brings back the sound of music that is so tender and the memory is evergreen. The lyrics speak of an unattainable desire to relive that moment again but acknowledges that it is past all endeavor.

The author talks about the moment as divine and filled with rapture until the clouds disperse the joy they had tasted. They lament the chance that was wasted and implore the orchestra not to begin the beguine, to let the love that was once a fire remain an ember, let it sleep like the dead desire that they only remember. As the song ends, they plead with the orchestra to play the beguine once more until the stars that were there before return, and they whisper to their love once more, "Darling, I love you," and they suddenly know what heaven they're in.

over the years i have heard chick sing this song many, many times, but never memorized the words , until i got onto Google and saw the complete words to this beautiful song.
When chick recorded this in 1939, he became an instant success , as did the Joe Loss
orchestra. Previously chick's name was not mentioned on the record label, it being only 'vocal',
but from 1939 onward, his name was shown on the label of the many recordings he made as : vocal: Chick Henderson. Many viewers here have given their appreciations in many different
ways, and i say thank you to YouTube and Google, for giving us all the chance to hear this
magnificent song and singer again. I say
A wonderful song
A wonderful singer
A wonderful orchestra
A wonderful memory

Very nicely put together visual, the perfect background to this super song superbly sung by Chick Henderson - the first singer to sell one million records. Many years ago I visited his grave in Gosport CWG cemetry in the UK, the caretaker told us people often called to pay their respects to a man who died more than 70 years ago.

Oh! the memories, my dads favorite of all time, so many versions but "nobody can sing it like Chick" i can hear him say it now.He would be singing and a little two step around the room. I know all the words and only 50! a truly great song. Dancing in Heaven

@paulkate72

I've said this before but here it is again: this is the best song ever! I epitomises everything we humans want and really should have. How sad that we've made such a mess of it all.

LOVELY SONG OF COLE PORTER.

@goinghomesomeday1

Its Sunday morning, My wife and I are sitting having breakfast and listening to our favourite singer and orchestra - time has stood still for this moment - what sweet memories. Reality will soon hit when we see the garbage on TV and on the wireless today. As a child in the last century this was a regular.

@MrDaiseymay

I remember it well. 'Housewives choice'' ''Family favourites'', it could be heard on all request record progs.

WoW - I have been searching for this particular tune for a long time now. It is one fantastic tune, played by one fantastic band and sung by a brilliant singer who has brought much pleasure to all who listened to him. Sadly - we will NEVER AGAIN have such music. Joe Loss, Chick Henderson and the band still live in their music played.

@goinghomesomeday1

When singers WERE singers, A band was A band and music was MUSIC. I was not around when this recording was made, but it brings back sweet memories of my parents and the old wireless.
