I love how phil played this hand absolutely awful! Betting the flop with two overs on the board vs a tight flatting range, check calling a monster on such a wet board on the turn, and then leading the river so all the busted draws can't bluff. He even complains that Q10s called preflop in position, what a joke!

@Daniel Cardenas why though? What is this guy flatting that's going to just fold to a bet? 88 can win in a checked down pot vs all the hands that you fold with a cbet. To flat a big raise in this position your opponent is only going to have high suited connectors,broadway, pairs, and suited aces. All the Ace highs with flushdraws and backdoor flush draws will call, the broaways and suited connectors all call. In position can even have a raising range that blows us off the pot. All the hands that would fold to a cbet like Ax that doesn't interact with the board have low equity vs your hand and won't want to bet that often. If you just bet everything people will call you light and float you. You are out of position which means your rate of checking is going to go way up as the preflop aggressor.

Queen Ten has been plaguing Phil since 2002 when not only did Varkoni knock him out of the main event with it, but also won the tournament with it while getting to shave Phil's head. I've said this numerous times, but there should be a compilation video of Phil losing to QT!

Depends, I suspect Phil wanted to simply steal the blinds with his initial raise, while still having a moderately strong hand if he got called. His flop bet was a semi bluff, that was just weak enough to con his opponent into thinking his hand was a higher pair (or a set) than what was on the board, and he wanted action. But in reality, he wanted folds, not calls or raises, he was trying to end the hand quickly and get something out of it. And even worse, is that he did hit his hand, but it helped his opponent more than it did him.

It looks bad on paper, when you can see the cards and recognise what the best play is, but if you pretend you can't, his actions are explainable.

"He called with Q-10." is hard for me to understand. If Phil's complaining that he called pre flop, then that's pretty ironic, because he suggested with his banter on the turn that he himself might have Q-10. It's possible that he was criticizing the call on the river, since it's arguable that the correct play would be to re raise instead of just call, with such a strong hand and no flush draw on the board. But maybe he thought Phil might have the same hand, and he was just avoiding the rake (if there was one)?

btw, him claiming to having QT and blaming the opponent to have QT isn't wrong per se. You are supposed to open a wider range than you're supposed to call with. You would open from UTG in a cash game with 98s but you're almost never supposed to call with it if not from the BB.

Board didn't pair up for Phil, this particular hand. Doesnt effect his actual skill set, it's the can't win them all scenario, nothing more/less. Least he now knows traits within this guys play, which will enivitably return to Phil in time. Turn card really isn't chasing in full form, chasing until river is a true chaser, that Phil knows all to well.
