Autumn Leaves
John Coltrane Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The falling leaves drift by the window
The autumn leaves of red and gold
I see your lips, the summer kisses
The sun-burned hands I used to hold

Since you went away the days grow long
And soon I'll hear old winter's song
But I miss you most of all my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of John Coltrane's "Autumn Leaves" beautifully capture the melancholy and longing that often accompanies the changing seasons. The opening lines set the scene, as the falling leaves drift by the window, symbolizing the passing of time and the transience of life. The vivid imagery of autumn leaves in red and gold reflects the beauty and fleeting nature of love, just like the changing foliage.

The lyrics take a nostalgic turn, expressing the pain of loss and the longing for a former love. The mention of "summer kisses" and "sun-burned hands" invokes memories of warmth and intimacy that have now become distant. The days grow long without the presence of the loved one, and the impending arrival of winter symbolizes the cold and harsh reality of a life without love.

The second verse, sung in French, adds an additional layer of emotion to the song. It speaks of a love that once existed between two people, but life has cruelly separated them, erasing their footprints in the sand like the sea tide washing away memories. It conveys the idea that sometimes love fades away silently, without any visible signs, leaving a deep sense of loss and longing.

not gonna lie, Trane's first few lines of his solo nearly moved me to tears. Coltrane is the only musician who can make me feel so emotional.

Gerhard Bitter

Not only Coltrane plays so emotional. Also Tyner, Jones and Garrison play for their lives.

@Gerhard Bitter YES THEY DO!!! The classic quartet was amazing. They were perfect for each other

So right before going to bed “hey ima check out this Coltrane live performance I haven’t listened to in years...” several tears and 10 minutes and 19 seconds of deep emotion later.. damn.. don’t think I’m going to sleep anytime soon.

Blackgeoff1

One of the things one could never really accuse Coltrane of would be playing bedtime music.

Amazing piano solo... All my respects to Mr Tyner.

Blackgeoff1

With you 100%... Tyner was one of the greatest piano players, in my opinion. Though some would disagree with me, I always reckoned that most of the best of Coltrane's recordings, when he had McCoy Tyner, were McCoy Tyner's solos.

I've just been getting into jazz in the past few months and i've gotta say, commenters on jazz videos are the most courteous, intellectual and just overall the most polite on youtube. It's such a breath of fresh air. Thank you
