Stardust
John Coltrane Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And now the purple dusk of twilight time
Steals across the meadows of my heart
High up in the sky the little stars climb
Always reminding me that we're apart
You wander down the lane and far away
Leaving me a song that will not die
Love is now the stardust of yesterday
The music of the years gone by.

Sometimes I wonder, how I spend
The lonely nights
Dreaming of a song
The melody
Haunts my reverie
And I am once again with you
When our love was new
And each kiss an inspiration
But that was long ago
And now my consolation is in the stardust of a song

Besides the garden wall, when stars are bright
You are in my arms
The nightingale
Tells his fairytale
Of paradise, where roses grew
Though I dream in vain
In my heart it will remain

My stardust melody
The memory of love's refrain.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of John Coltrane's "Stardust" evoke a bittersweet sense of longing and nostalgia for a love that has been lost. The first verse describes the beauty of twilight, which only serves to emphasize the singer's loneliness in the absence of their beloved. The second verse reveals the true heart of the song - the singer's recurring dreams of a time when their love was fresh and vibrant, and the pain of knowing that time has passed them by. Despite the pain, the singer finds solace in the memories of those moments and the music that reminds them of their love.

The third verse takes the listener on a trip into the imagination of the singer, who envisions a paradise where they can be reunited with their love in a romantic garden. However, the harsh reality that their love is gone sets in, and while the memories of their time together may be all that's left, they are still cherished, represented by the "stardust melody" that echoes in the singer's heart.

Overall, "Stardust" is a beautifully melancholic song that captures the sorrow of lost love and the enduring power of memory and music.

I'm admittedly a jazz novice, but I'm developing an intense crush on the talent of the late bassist Paul Chambers.

When I was young, my sister was given a music box that played 'Stardust' .... over and over again. Now I am much older, I can appreciate this timeless tune again ....over and over .... thanks to the inimitable artistry of John Coltrane and his four collaborators.

One of my favorite Jazz compositions to listen to while enjoying art at a museum or gallery

I have listened to these sessions possibly more than any other piece of music. Over and over since I first heard them when I was a teenager. Forty years have passed, longer than he was playing. It astonishes me that these sessions are the result of two days in a studio. Coltrane has two or three peaks in his musical output, I think its a mistake to rate them against each other. This era of his playing is beautiful.

Tthis is so beautiful I want to cry. Particularly I think, when Coltrane comes back in for the semi-improvised head at the end. It is so touching, and so creative and real. Truly amazing.

A great version. Hoagy Carmichael, who composed it in 1927, says he was inspired by Bix Beiderbecke's style of improvising.

That's the great thing about Standards - doesn't matter how many times you've heard them - every talented musician can expose new facets. I must say, Wilbur Harden - very tastefully done. Of the group, probably the least talked about today.

birdbreathes

yes, he was so tasteful. That kind of taste and restraint brings out the best qualities of trumpet playing my opinion
