Then I
John Coltrane Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You look at me and wonder, you look at me and doubt,
Darling your eyes are asking, "Will the flame burn out?"
Well, no one is sure of sun shine, no one is sure of dawn,
But I am sure my love will live on and on.
I'll be tired of you when stars are tired of gleaming
When I am tired of dreaming, then I'll be tired of you.
This I know is true, when winds are tired of blowing,
When grass is tired of growing, then I'll be tired of you.

Beyond the years,
'Til day is night, 'til wrong is right,
'Til birds refuse to sing,
Beyond the years, the echo of my only love
Will still be whispering, whispering.

And if my throbbing heart should ever start repeating
That it is tired of beating, then I'll be tired of you.

Overall Meaning

In the song "Then I'll Be Tired of You," John Coltrane presents a heartwarming message to his beloved. In the first verse, he acknowledges the doubt in his beloved's eyes and the question they beg: will the passion between them wane? Coltrane responds to this question with simple yet confident words. He pledges that he is certain that the fire of their love will continue to burn on and on, just like the dawn and the sun shine- which are both inevitable.

The second verse begins with a string of metaphors. "I'll be tired of you when stars are tired of gleaming/ When I am tired of dreaming, then I'll be tired of you." The imagery that he conjures up in this stanza is so powerful that it feels as though he is expressing his undying affection for his beloved. In the end, Coltrane leaves the listener with a conclusion that's thoroughly epic. His love will remain even when the world has lost hope. He declares this by saying "the echo of my only love will still be whispering" beyond the years, and in the unlikely event that his heart ever stopped beating, then he would be tired of her.

Overall, the song sounds like an assurance of love that will stand the test of time. It's a reminder of the significance of commitment and the value of true love.

Trane is so cool when he pays straight ahead Jazz! Red & Mr PC were part of Miles' sextet, too, that I saw so often down at Birdland! Miles, Cannonball & Philly Joe Jones would make it complete. Yeah! Freddie does a great job as does the drummer Art Taylor. Kudos to these Cats !
(When my aching heart keeps repeating, that it is tired of beating, then I'll be tired of you) or words to that effect. Dedicated to the Princess. She knows <3

Je me souviens d écoute sentimentalement exaltée. de ça quand j' avais 14 ans , et de ma déception en découvrant le titre plutôt mélancolique...
