I
John Coltrane Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I wish I knew someone like you could love me
I wish I knew you place no one above me
Did I mistake this for a real romance?
I wish I knew, but only you can answer.

If you don't care, why let me hop[e and pray so
Don't lead me on, if I'm a fool just say so,
Should I keep dreaming on, or just forget you?
What shall I do, I wish I knew

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of John Coltrane's song "I Wish I Knew" are a poignant reflection on the uncertainty and vulnerability that often accompanies romantic relationships. In the song, the singer expresses their deep feelings for their lover and their confusion about whether those feelings are reciprocated. They wish they knew whether their love is real or simply a figment of their imagination, and whether they should continue to hope for a relationship or move on.

The opening verse of the song sets the tone for the singer's self-doubt and anxiety: "I wish I knew someone like you could love me / I wish I knew you place no one above me." The singer is clearly besotted with their lover, but they worry that they are not worthy of their affection. They long for reassurance that their feelings are mutual and that their lover is committed to them. However, the singer acknowledges that they may be mistaken about the nature of their relationship: "Did I mistake this for a real romance? / I wish I knew, but only you can answer."

The second verse of the song raises even more questions about the singer's relationship with their lover: "If you don't care, why let me hope and pray so / Don't lead me on, if I'm a fool just say so." Here, the singer expresses their frustration with their lover's mixed signals. They want to believe that their lover shares their feelings, but they fear that they are being strung along. The final lines of the song convey the singer's ambivalence about their situation: "Should I keep dreaming on, or just forget you? / What shall I do, I wish I knew."

@gregbaskin7795

My brother turned me on the to Coltrane when I was 18. Live at Birdland. It absolutely shook my world. In my mind the greatest performance I've ever heard

@snowylim6818

John Coltrane was a sailor on the sea before he become musician,what if these inspiration of music appear in his mind when he was sailing on the sea?Such a beautiful mind to imagine

@masterofnone3981

Great analogy, for me when I’m on my sailboat a thousand miles from land there’s a sense of pure freedom you get. When I’m playing music my mind goes completely void of all thoughts except for the music, again identical to the feeling I get when I’m at sea. It’s such an awesome feeling, as close to ecstasy as one can achieve. I believe..

@Peacekindness23

He was a genius 👏

@jonasstone1520

Nice thought. Def check out. Marcus Millers kind of blue interview in which he addresses the dialog Miles had with Train about what was going on in Trains mind.

@leafbennet2293

What a wonderful way to interpret such a beautiful soul
