Last Time
John Farnham Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well I told you once and I told you twice
But you never listened to my advice
You don't try very hard to please me
And with what you know it should be easy
[Chorus]
Well this could be the last time
This could be the last time
Maybe the last time - I don't know - oh no, oh no

Well I'm sorry girl but I can't stay
When I'm feeling like I do today
Well there's too much pain and too much sorrow
And you know I'll feel the same tomorrow

[Chorus]

Well I told you once and I told you twice
Somebody gonna have to pay the price

Now here's a chance to change your mind
'Cause I'm gonna be gone a long long time

Overall Meaning

In John Farnham's song Last Time, the lyrics describe a relationship that has reached its breaking point. The singer has repeatedly tried to get their partner to listen to them, but they "never listened to [their] advice." They feel unappreciated as their partner "don't try very hard to please [them]" even though it should be easy based on what they know about each other. The song's chorus emphasizes the finality of the situation: "this could be the last time...maybe the last time - I don't know - oh no, oh no."

The second verse explains that the singer is unable to stay in the relationship "when [they're] feeling like [they] do today." There's "too much pain and too much sorrow" and they don't see things improving in the future. The closing lines of the song reinforce the fact that the singer is leaving for good, stating that somebody is going to have to pay the price and they're going to be gone for a long time.

Overall, Last Time is a poignant reflection on the difficulty of accepting when a relationship has run its course. The lyrics make it clear that the singer has tried, given ample chances for change, and ultimately had to move on for their own well-being.

THE most overlooked & under rated person EVER!!! I was a 15 yr old when Sadie hit the charts. We all fell in love with 'Johnny' BUT someone this brilliant SO overlooked? John Farnham has the greatest voice we have ever heard so why did it take so long for him to be noticed? Whispering Jack, his 1st album at 38 was a wake up call for us all and we heard his phenominal voice. Finally he is heard and given the recognition he deserves.
Thanks John for being able to share your brilliant gift with us all💕

Bloody hell!
I've got to stop watching all these John Farnham concerts, reactions etc.
I've burnt the bloody spuds.

AGAIN!!

But that's what he does. You just can't pull yourself away from that divine voice and his goofy humour just makes you love him even more.
Saying thank you to John just never seems enough.

@geerterri

I find it fascinating that John makes the audience part of his show. It's great.
