Back in the Hills
John Fogerty Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

This old push-and-shovin' city life, lord, had really got me down.
I'm goin' back and leaving here tonight, get my feet on the ground.

Chorus:
I'm goin back (back to the hills), I'm goin back (back to the hills),
Goin' back (back to the hills) tonight (back to the hills).
I'm goin back (back to the hills), I'm goin back (back to the hills),
Goin' back (back to the hills) tonight (back to the hills).

My time is done for livin' on the run, and the money making schemes,
Feelin' success and takin' all the rest, empty hearts and shattered dreams.

Chorus
Oo-oo-oooh!
Oo-oo-oooh!

Back (I'm goin' back to the), back (I'm goin' back to the),
Back (I'm goin' back to the), tonight! (I'm goin' back to the)
Back (I'm goin' back to the), back (I'm goin' back to the),
Back (I'm goin' back to the), tonight! (I'm goin' back to the)

Chorus

Tell your pa I'm gonna leave it all, he won't be seeing me around,
And if you like, just come along tonight, get your feet on the ground.

Chorus

I'm goin' back! (I'm goin' back to the)... etc.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics "This old push-and-shovin' city life, lord, had really got me down, I'm goin' back and leaving here tonight, get my feet on the ground" express a deep longing for a return to a simpler and more natural way of living. The singer is feeling overwhelmed and disillusioned by the fast-paced and competitive nature of city life, and seeks solace in the tranquility and groundedness of the hills. Leaving the city behind represents a desire to escape the pressures and stresses of urban life in favor of reconnecting with a more authentic and meaningful existence.

The chorus "I'm goin back (back to the hills), I'm goin back (back to the hills), Goin' back (back to the hills) tonight (back to the hills)" reinforces the theme of returning to a place of comfort and peace. The repetition of "back to the hills" highlights the urgency and determination of the singer to make this shift in their life. The hills symbolize a sanctuary where one can find refuge and rediscover themselves away from the chaos of the city.

The lyrics "My time is done for livin' on the run, and the money making schemes, Feelin' success and takin' all the rest, empty hearts and shattered dreams" reflect a sense of disillusionment with the pursuit of material success and the emptiness it brings. The singer has grown tired of the relentless pursuit of wealth and status, realizing that true fulfillment cannot be found in the superficial trappings of success. This realization prompts the decision to leave it all behind and seek a more authentic and fulfilling way of life in the hills.

The closing lines "Tell your pa I'm gonna leave it all, he won't be seeing me around, And if you like, just come along tonight, get your feet on the ground" suggest a desire for companionship in this journey back to the hills. The singer invites others to join them in embracing a more grounded and meaningful existence, encouraging a return to simplicity and connection with nature. The overall message of the song conveys a longing for a return to a life of authenticity, away from the artificiality and pressures of modern urban living.

1973 - 1976 was the best part of his solo career in my opinion. As a great one man band.

@yeti2352

I wish he would play this one live and/or do a redo on an album.

@strateshooter007

Sound to me like back to his roots in Troy.  Love it.
