Legend also played the piano on Lauryn Hill's 1998 song "Everything is Everything" and sang background vocals on Jay-Z's "Encore" and Alicia Keys' "You Don't Know My Name". Legend frequently cites gospel, R&B, and hip hop music as his main musical influences.
Legend released his critically acclaimed and Billboard Top Ten second album, Once Again, in October 2006. Produced by Raphael Saadiq, Kanye West and will.i.am, it is again a mixture of gospel and classic soul showcasing his extraordinary voice, particularly on "Show Me".

Neo-soul singer and pianist John Legend combined the raw fervor of contemporaries Cody ChesnuTT and the burning precision of D'Angelo. Born John Stephens, Legend was a child prodigy who grew up in Ohio, where he began singing gospel and playing piano at the tender age of five. Legend left Ohio at 16 to attend college in Philadelphia, and it was there that he first found a larger audience. Not yet out of his teens, Legend was tapped to play piano on Lauryn Hill's "Everything Is Everything" in 1998. After completing college, he moved to New York, where he began to build a loyal following playing in nightclubs and releasing CDs that he would sell at shows. He also became an in-demand session musician, playing and occasionally writing for a wide array of artists, including Alicia Keys, Twista, Janet Jackson, and Kanye West. It wasn't until West signed the young talent to his new label that he adopted the Legend name with 2004's Solo Sessions Vol. 1: Live at the Knitting Factory. Get Lifted, his first studio album, was released later in the year. On the strength of enduring single "Ordinary People," the album reached the Top Five of the Billboard 200. This led to three Grammy Awards: Best R&B Album, Best R&B Male Vocal Performance, and Best New Artist. Once Again, which peaked at number three on the Billboard 200 and number one on the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, followed in October 2006. Live from Philadelphia, sold exclusively at Target stores, was a successful stopgap release that predated October 2008's Evolver.

But I'm phoning just to say, I'm sorry
All the flights have been delayed, I've got nowhere to stay
But if I can find my way, I'll hurry
Just hang up the Christmas lights, and I'll do the rest tonight
Just tell the kids I'm coming, I swear that I'll be running
And under the Christmas tree, together yet we will be
I'm gonna walk, if I have to run
I'll stand on the highway and stop someone
I'll cross the deserts and oceans, a river that's frozen
I'll follow the stars just to find where you are
You can count on me
Make a wish, close your eyes, and believe
I'll be home, home, home, home, home by Christmas Eve
And I know it's all on you, keep it together like you're glue
And everything you do, I notice
So I'll bring presents, I'll bring wine
A mistletoe for you and I
And I'll be there just in time to show it
Just hang up the Christmas lights, and I'll do the rest tonight
And tell the kids I'm coming, I swear that I'll be running
Under the Christmas tree, together yet we will be
I promise
I'm gonna walk, if I have to run
I'll stand on the highway and stop someone
I'll cross the deserts and oceans, a river that's frozen
I'll follow the stars just to find where you are
You can count on me
Make a wish, close your eyes, and believe
I'll be home, home, home, home, home by Christmas Eve
Whoa, I'll find my way back to California
I'll follow the map, yeah, to somewhere warmer
I'll carry my bags just until I can hold you again
Oh I'm gonna walk, if I have to run
I'll stand on the highway and stop someone
I'll cross the deserts and oceans, a river that's frozen
I'll follow the stars just to find where you are
You can count on me
Make a wish, close your eyes, and believe
I'll be home, home, home, home, home by Christmas Eve
The lyrics of John Legend's song "By Christmas Eve" tell the story of someone who is far away from their loved ones during the Christmas season. Despite being a thousand miles away, they reach out to express their apologies for not being able to make it home. With flights delayed and nowhere to stay, they assure their family that they will do everything in their power to be there by Christmas Eve.
The song speaks of determination and resilience, as the singer vows to walk, run, and stop strangers on the highway if necessary, just to be reunited with their family. They are willing to cross deserts, oceans, and frozen rivers, and follow the stars to find their way back home. The lyrics convey a sense of love, commitment, and the importance of being together during this special time of year.
The chorus serves as a reassurance to their family, telling them to hang up the Christmas lights and inform the kids that they are coming. They promise that they will be there just in time to celebrate Christmas together under the Christmas tree.
Overall, "By Christmas Eve" is a heartfelt song that expresses the longing and determination to be reunited with loved ones during the holiday season. It captures the sentiment of missing family and the lengths one is willing to go to make it home for Christmas.
