Legend also played the piano on Lauryn Hill's 1998 song "Everything is Everything" and sang background vocals on Jay-Z's "Encore" and Alicia Keys' "You Don't Know My Name". Legend frequently cites gospel, R&B, and hip hop music as his main musical influences.
Legend released his critically acclaimed and Billboard Top Ten second album, Once Again, in October 2006. Produced by Raphael Saadiq, Kanye West and will.i.am, it is again a mixture of gospel and classic soul showcasing his extraordinary voice, particularly on "Show Me".

Neo-soul singer and pianist John Legend combined the raw fervor of contemporaries Cody ChesnuTT and the burning precision of D'Angelo. Born John Stephens, Legend was a child prodigy who grew up in Ohio, where he began singing gospel and playing piano at the tender age of five. Legend left Ohio at 16 to attend college in Philadelphia, and it was there that he first found a larger audience. Not yet out of his teens, Legend was tapped to play piano on Lauryn Hill's "Everything Is Everything" in 1998. After completing college, he moved to New York, where he began to build a loyal following playing in nightclubs and releasing CDs that he would sell at shows. He also became an in-demand session musician, playing and occasionally writing for a wide array of artists, including Alicia Keys, Twista, Janet Jackson, and Kanye West. It wasn't until West signed the young talent to his new label that he adopted the Legend name with 2004's Solo Sessions Vol. 1: Live at the Knitting Factory. Get Lifted, his first studio album, was released later in the year. On the strength of enduring single "Ordinary People," the album reached the Top Five of the Billboard 200. This led to three Grammy Awards: Best R&B Album, Best R&B Male Vocal Performance, and Best New Artist. Once Again, which peaked at number three on the Billboard 200 and number one on the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, followed in October 2006. Live from Philadelphia, sold exclusively at Target stores, was a successful stopgap release that predated October 2008's Evolver.
Wrap Me Up in Your Love

Wrap me up in your love this Christmas
Wrap me up in your love
Let's enjoy the holiday, be here and now, this time and place
Laughter while the children play
These memories, they'll never fade
Let them open every gift, and while they do, we'll sneak a kiss
Wrap me up in your love this Christmas
Wrap me up in your love
You've been at the top of my wish list
Hoping I've been good enough
(This season, you're my reason)
Oh, you know just what I want, yeah
(Both giving, both receiving)
So wrap me up in your love
Ay, we don't need no mistletoe
I'll kiss you, love, everywhere you go
There's nothing left here but the tree
The fireplace, and you and me
We'll pour another glass of wine
It's almost midnight, this is our time
And we won't even feel the cold, we can let it snow
Wrap me up in your love this Christmas, wrap me up in your love
You've been at the top of my wish list
Hoping I've been good enough
(This season, you're my reason)
You're the only one I want, yeah
(Both giving, both receiving)
So wrap me up in your love
(Oh, this season, you're my reason)
Oh, you're the only one I want, yeah
(Both giving, both receiving)
So wrap me up in your love
Oh, look out, out the window
It's a snow globe, baby shake it, can you shake it?
Light the candle, let the fire glow, and I'll hold you close
(I'll hold you close)
Yeah, wrap me up in your love
(Wrap me up in your love)
Yeah, wrap me up in your love
Oh, wrap me up in your love, oh
Wrap me up in your love this Christmas, wrap me up in your love
Wrap me up in your love, yeah
In "Wrap Me Up in Your Love," John Legend expresses the desire to be engulfed in the love and warmth of his partner during the Christmas season. The repetition of the phrase "wrap me up in your love" emphasizes his longing to be completely surrounded and embraced by their affection.
The song sets the scene of a joyful holiday celebration, where the focus is on cherishing the present moment with loved ones. Legend encourages embracing laughter and making lasting memories, particularly with the children. The act of sneaking a kiss reminds us of the intimate and playful connection shared with our partner amidst the festivities. Legend highlights that his true gift for the day is simply having his partner by his side, indicating that their love is the most valuable present.
Legend suggests that the couple doesn't need traditional mistletoe to share affection. He playfully expresses his desire to shower his partner with kisses wherever they go. The imagery of the Christmas tree, fireplace, and the couple alludes to a cozy and intimate setting, providing them with a sense of comfort and togetherness. The song portrays a moment of pure joy and contentment despite the winter cold, with the mention of snow symbolizing the enchantment of the season.
The song emphasizes the significance of his partner's love, as they hold the top spot on his wish list. Legend longs to have their love envelop him entirely, insinuating that his relationship is his biggest desire during the holiday season. The line "both giving, both receiving" emphasizes the importance of reciprocating love and nurturing each other emotionally, creating a harmonious bond.
As the song concludes, Legend paints a picturesque scene of looking out the window at a snowy landscape. The snow globe imagery reinforces the idea of a magical and whimsical atmosphere. The act of shaking the snow globe represents a desire to live in the beauty and wonder of the moment with his partner. Lighting a candle and feeling the warmth of the fire signifies comfort, and being held closely solidifies the connection between the two individuals.
"Wrap Me Up in Your Love" is a heartfelt plea for love and connection during the holiday season. It showcases the desire to be surrounded by the affection and presence of a loved one, creating a warm and intimate atmosphere amidst the festivities.
