Legend also played the piano on Lauryn Hill's 1998 song "Everything is Everything" and sang background vocals on Jay-Z's "Encore" and Alicia Keys' "You Don't Know My Name". Legend frequently cites gospel, R&B, and hip hop music as his main musical influences.
Legend released his critically acclaimed and Billboard Top Ten second album, Once Again, in October 2006. Produced by Raphael Saadiq, Kanye West and will.i.am, it is again a mixture of gospel and classic soul showcasing his extraordinary voice, particularly on "Show Me".

Neo-soul singer and pianist John Legend combined the raw fervor of contemporaries Cody ChesnuTT and the burning precision of D'Angelo. Born John Stephens, Legend was a child prodigy who grew up in Ohio, where he began singing gospel and playing piano at the tender age of five. Legend left Ohio at 16 to attend college in Philadelphia, and it was there that he first found a larger audience. Not yet out of his teens, Legend was tapped to play piano on Lauryn Hill's "Everything Is Everything" in 1998. After completing college, he moved to New York, where he began to build a loyal following playing in nightclubs and releasing CDs that he would sell at shows. He also became an in-demand session musician, playing and occasionally writing for a wide array of artists, including Alicia Keys, Twista, Janet Jackson, and Kanye West. It wasn't until West signed the young talent to his new label that he adopted the Legend name with 2004's Solo Sessions Vol. 1: Live at the Knitting Factory. Get Lifted, his first studio album, was released later in the year. On the strength of enduring single "Ordinary People," the album reached the Top Five of the Billboard 200. This led to three Grammy Awards: Best R&B Album, Best R&B Male Vocal Performance, and Best New Artist. Once Again, which peaked at number three on the Billboard 200 and number one on the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, followed in October 2006. Live from Philadelphia, sold exclusively at Target stores, was a successful stopgap release that predated October 2008's Evolver.

We don't wanna go out like that
Come back
We can't go out like this
It's just the two of us
We should be makin' up
We could be makin' love
Now you say you're givin' up
Took too much to build this house
I don't wanna sit and watch it burn down
I ain't leaving, I ain't leaving, I ain't leaving
I ain't giving you space
I will not be replaced
I don't wanna save face
Don't leave me open, leave me open, leave me open
Leave me open like that
Whatever love we had
We need to get it back
Can we just wait?
Don't walk away
Don't walk away
Don't walk away
Can we just wait?
Don't walk away
Don't walk away
There's so much more I wanna say
Come back, come back
We don't wanna go out like that
Come back, come back
We don't wanna go out like that
When we go to war like this
Nobody's winning it
Nobody's gotta leave
We're not the enemy
You know we're better than this
It's no ordinary love
And if we gonna fight
Then we need to fight for us
Can we just wait?
Don't walk away
Don't walk away
Don't walk away
Can we just wait?
Don't walk away
Don't walk away
There's so much more I wanna say
Take, take, take time
Fragile is my love
I ain't never givin' up
Give you my life, I would
I'll stand by you, bad times and good
I can't really cope like this
When you say you don't know me
Oh, why can't we slow things down?
Won't you put your love on me? Yeah
When mi touch di road, give me one phone call
Baby don't go
You are my love, so mi give you my all
I don't mind holding you, so you don't fall
(I don't mind holding you, so you don't fall)
(So you don't fall)
Can we just wait?
Don't walk away
Don't walk away
Don't walk away
Can we just wait?
Don't walk away
Don't walk away
There's so much more I wanna say
Come back, come back
We don't wanna go out like that (we don't wanna go)
Come back, come back
We don't wanna go out like that
Hey baby
Come on over
Yeah
Ooh, baby
We don't wanna go out
No, no, nah, nah, no
The lyrics to John Legend's song "Don't Walk Away" explore the theme of wanting to salvage a relationship that is on the brink of falling apart. The song expresses a deep desire for the two people in the relationship to resolve their issues and come back to each other. The opening verse of the song sets the tone, as the singer pleads for his partner not to give up on them. The chorus emphasizes this sentiment with the repeated request for the partner to come back, as they don't want to end their relationship in a negative way.
The second verse implies that the couple used to have a different type of communication and connection, and the singer notes that he doesn't want to watch their relationship fall apart like a house burning down. He sings that he won't leave and that he wants to fight to save their love. The bridge of the song suggests that the couple needs to slow down and take the time to work things out. The final chorus pleads with the partner not to walk away and suggests that there is still more to say to each other.
Overall, "Don't Walk Away" is a passionate and heartfelt plea for the survival of a relationship. It's a reminder that even when things get difficult, it's important to fight for what you love.

Let's go to the park
I wanna kiss you underneath the stars
Maybe we'll go too far
We just don't care
We just don't care
We just don't care
You know I love it when you're loving me
Sometimes it's better when it's publicly
I'm not ashamed, I don't care who sees
Us hugging and kissing, our love exhibition, oh
We'll rendezvous out on the fire escape
I'd like to set off an alarm today
The love emergency, don't make me wait
Just follow I'll lead you
I urgently need you
Let's go to the park
I wanna kiss you underneath the stars
Maybe we'll go too far
We just don't care
We just don't care
We just don't
Let's make love
Let's go somewhere they might discover us
Let's get lost in lust
We just don't care
We just don't care
We just don't care
I see you closing down the restaurant
Let's sneak and do it when your boss is gone
Everybody's leaving, we'll have some fun
Or maybe it's wrong but you're turning me on
Ooh, we'll take a visit to your mama's house
Creep to the bedroom while your mama's out
Maybe she'll hear it when we scream and shout
But we'll keep it rocking until she comes knocking, oh
Let's go to the park
I wanna kiss you underneath the stars
Maybe we'll go too far
We just don't care
We just don't care
We just don't
Let's make love
Let's go somewhere they might discover us
Let's get lost in lust
We just don't care
We just don't care
We just don't care
If we keep up all this fooling around
We'll be the talk of the town
I'll tell the world I've a love in the town
Let's open up the blinds 'cause we really don't mind
Ooh, I don't care about propriety
Let's break the rules, ignore society
Maybe our neighbor like to spy, it's true
So what if they watch when we do what we do
Oh, let's go to the park
I wanna kiss you underneath the stars
Maybe we'll go too far
We just don't care
We just don't care
We just don't
Let's make love
Let's go somewhere they might discover us
Let's get lost in lust
We just don't care
We just don't
