Rights for Gays
John Maus Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Rights for gays, oh yeah
Rights for gays, oh yeah
Right now
Rights for gays, oh yeah

Rights for gays, oh yeah
Rights for gays, oh yeah
Right now
Rights for gays, oh yeah

Comin' out
And they're going to hell
Tie 'em to a fence post
So you can take, take 'em to the bank

These homosexuals
And they're going to hell
Tie 'em to a fence post
And you can take, take 'em to the bank

Rights for gays, oh yeah
Rights for gays, oh yeah
Right now
Rights for gays, oh yeah

And medical care for everyone
The doctor is in
The doctor is in

These homosexuals

Rights for gays, oh yeah
Rights for gays, oh yeah

Right now
Rights for gays, oh yeah

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of John Maus's song "Rights for Gays" are politically charged and express his support for the LGBTQ+ community, as well as concern for their mistreatment. The repeated refrain of "Rights for gays, oh yeah" is a call to action for the granting of equal rights to the gay community. Maus also addresses the bigotry and violence faced by the gay community through the line "Comin' out, And they're going to hell, Tie 'em to a fence post, So you can take, take 'em to the bank." This line references the tragic 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard, a gay student in Wyoming who was tied to a fence post and beaten to death.

Maus continues to show his support for the gay community with the line "And medical care for everyone, The doctor is in," which suggests that everyone, regardless of sexual orientation, deserves the right to medical care. The song's repetition of the phrase "Rights for gays" reinforces the urgency and importance of this message, demanding change and equality now.

In addition, Maus's use of repetition throughout the song, including the repetition of certain lines and the simplistic musical structure, creates a sense of urgency and highlights the importance of the message. Overall, "Rights for Gays" is a politically charged protest song that expresses support for the LGBTQ+ community and demands equal rights and treatment.

Are you fucked? He was INCREDIBLE when I saw him live. Maybe he just has really chancey performances... but God, when I saw him, he gave one of the most passionate shows I've ever seen in my life. I even talked to him afterwards and told him so. Really great guy, just hung out and talked to people for like half an hour.
