Do Your Best
John Maus Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Someone,

Someones alone,

In the city tonight,

You've gotta do whats right,
In the city tonight,

Someones alone,

Reach out your hands to the one alone,

In your city tonight,

You've gotta do whats right,

In your city tonight

Someones alone,

Someones alone,

In your city,

Someones alone,

Someones alone,

In your city tonight,

You've gotta do whats right,

In the city,

Reach out the hands to the one alone,

In your city,

Reach out your hands to the one alone,

In the city, in the city, in the city.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of John Maus's song "Do Your Best" speak on the importance of helping those who are alone in the city. The repeated phrase "someone's alone" is a reminder to listeners that even in the bustling city, there are people who may be feeling isolated or disconnected. The verses urge the listener to take action and "reach out your hands to the one alone." The phrase "you've gotta do what's right" emphasizes the moral obligation to help those in need.

The repetition of the phrase "in your city tonight" is significant to the theme of the song. It suggests that the responsibility of helping someone alone in the city lies with the people within that community. The urgency of the song is further emphasized by the insistent repetition of the phrases, "someone's alone" and "you've gotta do what's right." These repetitive phrases, paired with the driving synth-pop beat of the song, effectively communicate the message of societal responsibility.

Overall, "Do Your Best" is an anthem for community and empathy, advocating for a compassionate response to those who are alone or isolated in the city.

"I suppose if I had an essential goal on the cruise right now, it would be to exhibit the fact that I'm thrilled to be alive and to still be respected.
I suppose the soulful or the Buddhist out there might ask, "Why do you need respect from others? "The thrill to be alive, that's your own business.
You can do that in your living room."
But that's not what the cruise is for me.
The cruise is about the searching for everything worthwhile in existence.
I mean, I will appreciate the beauty of a flower, and then likewise, I will stand exhibitionistic and have the flower appreciate the beauty of me.
Well, that's how I feel about cruising right now.
And I would say having a quote, unquote, "intimate love affair" with a flower is far more psychotic and riveting than having an "intimate love affair," quote, unquote, with some of the banal creatures of the human race.
Although, I'd be into that, too."

Not many songs can drop you immediately into a specific feeling like this one does.

@lorelaim3294

I love almost all of his songs but this one has a special place in my heart because it just sounds so...atmospheric? idk, but it calms me down

@kudjo24

yup, the picture helps but even just the music itself places me there instantly without needing to see it visually. reminds me of pretty much what title is, sometimes lifes seems to big and ambitious with too little time, just try your best and love one another.

@ITHINKTHEREFOREGODEXISTS

I HAVE BELIEVED IN SOME OF THESE WORDS MY WHOLE 79 YEARS ON THIS PLANET. (DO YOUR BEST AND DO WHAT'S RIGHT, IT'S THE RIGHT THING TO DO.) HELP EACH OTHER.

@shaun8062

I'm with you brother. We will.

@jonathant4201

This is so immersive. Someone being alone in a city is such a universal theme and thats what great pop music is all about.

@matttheamerican3766

Jonathan T Great pop music, is about being alone in the city?

@horrifyingcat

i think john maus is fairly far from whatever "pop music" is

@dimitrioualexi

@Bob Balls I don't think so. And he doesn't either. Pop music ≠ popular music

@horrifyingcat

that's literally what pop music means
