Another Kind of Green
John Mayer Trio Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sarah's friend she lost her mind
Left him and made it look sexy and all
You fear I won't be far behind
Thinking I'll be the next to leave
I know I might be anxious
But I'm still not crazy

And I don't need another kind of green to know
I'm on the right side
I'm on the right side with you

I used to be the one you saw
Crying alone to sad songs
But then we go and hit the wall
When nothings changed and nothing's wrong
It's not the perfect hand
But I don't hit on nineteen

And I don't need another kind of green to know
I'm on the right side
I'm on the right side with you

Someday you'll drift away from me
Adopt some new philosophy
That doesn't keep the two of us in mind
Move into someone else's place
And stare into some other's eyes
And slowly only come to realize

That you didn't need another kind of green to know
I'm on the right

Mine was the right side
I'm on the right side with you

Overall Meaning

Another Kind Of Green by John Mayer Trio is a song about the singer's fear of losing the person he loves, even though he knows he doesn't need any other kind of motivation to be with her. In the first verse, he talks about Sarah's friend who lost her mind and left her partner, making it look sexy. He fears that he might be the next to leave, but assures his love that he's not crazy. He's anxious but knows that she's the one he wants to be with.

In the second verse, the singer talks about how he used to be the one who cried alone to sad songs, but then they hit the wall when nothing changed, and nothing was wrong. It wasn't a perfect hand, but he didn't hit on nineteen. He knows that he's on the right side with her, and he doesn't need another kind of green (money) to know that.

The chorus of the song repeats the same message that the singer doesn't need any other kind of motive to know that he's on the right side with her. In the last verse, he talks about how someday, she might drift away from him and adopt some new philosophy that doesn't keep the two of them in mind. He fears that she might move into someone else's place and stare into some other's eyes and slowly realize that she didn't need another kind of green to know that he was on the right side, and that she made a mistake by leaving him.

So go and drift away from me
Adopt some new philosophy
That doesn't hold the two of us in mind
Move into someone else's place
Stare into some other's eyes

I'm on the right side
You're on the right side

You don't need to lose it to know that you had it
Know that you had it
Know that you had it
Don't need to lose it to know that you had it good

Easily his most underrated song, amazing.

@JoaoSilva-bn5mg

I think that the one even more underrated than this one is in your atmosphere. Although both this one and covered in rain are also extremely underrated. But I honestly like that there are so many underrated songs of JM. It makes is music even more special.

@nintendonut100

Comfortable is another super underrated one of his. He's put out a lot of stuff that doesn't get enough credit imo.

@victorfortes3887

João Silva that's exactly my favorite tracks from JM lol The Lenny/Man On The Side medley is also ridiculously good

@nyg974ever29

João Silva covered in rain is crazy

@ohdannyboy6801

I think John's biggest problem is that he writes so many 10/10 songs that they drown each other out. I've been listening to JM for 10 years at this point and every once in a while I still find old tracks or unreleased songs that blow my mind

WHY THE HELL DOESN'T HE PLAY THIS WITH HIS MAIN BAND?? This is probably one of his best songs, and practically no one knows about it.

@caspervanhelvoirt9460

Jdogbez John has a networth of 60 mill. He doesn't need songs to make a living off anymore lol!
