Well, spending literally all of your free time shut inside your bedroom listening to music and practicing along from the time you were 13 years old will do that for you. Hell, Mayer's parents took him to see a shrink because that's how obsessed and dedicated he was to learning how to play. Anybody can learn how to play, sing, etc like this, IF they're dedicated enough. Not many people are dedicated enough to put everything else on hold and do nothing but go to school, work their part-time gas station job and obsessively practice playing. Those that are, well, this is what you get.

I saw him play this live opening for the Rolling Stones in 2005 I think it was. He absolutely killed it. It's really a small thing, but I love when drummers layer high hat lifts (eighth notes here) on top of the main beat (shown 1:55-2:00). It seems so easy on the surface, but it adds another degree of complexity (especially at this tempo). Jimmy Chamberlin from Smashing Pumpkins does this a lot too, but it seems to be so rare these days.

I think this performance and this trio are awesome! Really tight band...fun to watch! I remember watching a behind-the-scenes interview of John Mayer about this concert, particularly when he was praising the drummer that it brings out the best in him when they would jive while he's playing guotar solos. On that clip, he totally forgot to thank Pino about how good he is at carrying the band. Yes, CARRYING. For a song particularly like this, the whole atmosphere was carried by the bassist. The guitarist and the drummer would sound awful without a good bassist as pino is. Its a shame to JM he totally missed to applaud pino for his bass playing. And kinda weird that he appeared to be totally one sided on his commentary.

Every time I watch this, I am absolutely blown away by their musicality. John's internal timing is just impeccable, Pino's groove is out of this world, and Steve Jordan, oh man what a drummer! Always plays the right thing, exactly what the song requires (I LOVE his snare drum sound, it pops like crazy). Insane performance!

To get one thing straight, john IS a very good artist but could never be compared to a god that jimi is, I'm sorry if I insulted you but there is NO way that he made it better, jimi's music is already perfect it's just the way john made HIS version of the song.cheers.

XxStonedKillerxX I really don't understand why the term "sloppy" is a bad thing, honestly. Maybe for metal, it would be better to be more clean, but for blues, and similar genres, it really shouldn't be necessary. Both versions are equal in my opinion.
