Besides these two songs, five more of Montgomery's singles have reached the top of the country charts: "I Love the Way You Love Me", "Be My Baby Tonight", "If You've Got Love", "I Can Love You Like That", and "The Little Girl", while thirteen more have reached Top Ten. Montgomery's recordings of "I Swear" and "I Can Love You Like That" were both released concurrently with R&B versions by the group All-4-One. Montgomery has also released eleven studio albums, counting a Christmas album.
John Michael joined the family band (which also included his brother, Eddie Montgomery, who would later join Troy Gentry in the duo Montgomery Gentry) as guitarist before taking the lead singing role when his parents divorced. Afterwards, he made a frugal living on the local honky-tonk scene as a solo artist playing what he referred to as "working man's country." Eventually, Atlantic Records signed him.

We pulled off the road to a place we'd never been
I had to stop the truck because it was getting muddy
We started kissing, then I put it in?
Four-wheel drive and we kept going
Man, what a ride, made me feel like a kid again
Slippin' and slidin', bouncin' around in the cab
Then I pulled it out back on the main road
I looked over at darlin', her face was all aglow
She said, "Honey, that was wonderful, can we do it again?"
So I leaned over toward her and put it back in?
Four-wheel drive and we kept going
Man, what a ride, made me feel like a kid again
Slippin' and slidin', bouncin' around in the cab
Bringin' back old memories of all the good times we've had
We were slippin' and slidin', bouncin' around in the cab
Bringin' back old memories of all the good times we've had
Yeah, darlin' loves it when I put it in four-wheel drive
Four-wheel drive
The song "Four-Wheel Drive" by John Michael Montgomery is a lighthearted and playful tune about getting stuck in the mud and making the most of the situation. The lyrics describe a couple who pull off the road to a new location, but find themselves getting stuck in the mud. However, instead of getting frustrated, they use the opportunity to engage in some romantic time together. This is where the four-wheel drive comes into play- as they shift into this gear, their truck gains traction and they continue on with their escapades. The bumpy ride and slippery conditions only make their time together more exciting, and they reminisce about all the good times they've had in the past while bouncing around in the cab.
The lyrics of this song could be interpreted in a number of ways, but it seems to be a celebration of spontaneity and making the most of any situation. The couple in the song find themselves stuck in the mud, but instead of getting upset or giving up, they turn it into a memorable experience. The four-wheel drive becomes a metaphor for the way they approach life- they're not afraid to take risks or get a little bit dirty in pursuit of adventure. Overall, "Four-Wheel Drive" is a fun and upbeat track that encourages listeners to embrace their wild side and enjoy the ride.
