Besides these two songs, five more of Montgomery's singles have reached the top of the country charts: "I Love the Way You Love Me", "Be My Baby Tonight", "If You've Got Love", "I Can Love You Like That", and "The Little Girl", while thirteen more have reached Top Ten. Montgomery's recordings of "I Swear" and "I Can Love You Like That" were both released concurrently with R&B versions by the group All-4-One. Montgomery has also released eleven studio albums, counting a Christmas album.
John Michael joined the family band (which also included his brother, Eddie Montgomery, who would later join Troy Gentry in the duo Montgomery Gentry) as guitarist before taking the lead singing role when his parents divorced. Afterwards, he made a frugal living on the local honky-tonk scene as a solo artist playing what he referred to as "working man's country." Eventually, Atlantic Records signed him.

Changes were taking place
You looked in the mirror
A smile was all over your face
?Cause out of nowhere, someone was there
Who dared to climb those walls you've made
And it's exciting, a little frightening
But girl, don't you be afraid
Love working
Love working on you
That's just love working
Working on pulling you through
Can't even remember
All the sorrow that you left behind
There's a brand new day, there's a bright new way
And your tears have turned into wine
You'll never forget when your eyes met
Oh, just how clearly you could see
Where the turns are, deep in your heart
That lead you to believe
(That it's)
Love working
Love working on you
That's just love working
Working on pulling you through
All of the while you've felt forsaken
And all of the while love's been waiting, waiting
And suddenly you see how it could be
If we all only felt this way
And for awhile girl you can see this world
Looking through the eyes of faith (that's just)
Love working
Love working on you
That's just love working
Working on pulling you through
Love working
Love working on you
That's just love working
Working on pulling you through
The lyrics of John Michael Montgomery's song Love Working on You portray the positive effects of love on an individual's life. The song begins with the depiction of a person who wakes up one day to see a change in their self-perception. The person looks at their reflection in the mirror and sees a smile, which reflects a new-found happiness. The reasons behind this change are attributed to love as someone had dared to climb the walls that they had built around themselves. This instance is seen as both exciting and frightening by the person, but they are urged to not be afraid as love is just working on them.
The next verse talks about the newfound happiness and how the person has left behind their sorrow. There is a sense of rejuvenation in their life, and their tears have turned into wine, indicating a sense of positivity overcoming the negative emotions. The lyrics bring out how the experience of falling in love and the clarity it brings changes the person's perception of life. The pre-chorus highlights the belief that love can work on anyone, and it is a force that can help pull someone out of their problems.
The chorus is the essence of the song that emphasizes how love is a continuous process that pulls one out of their problems and works towards their improvement. The song ends with a message of hope for the world, calling on us to see the world from the perspective of love.
