Besides these two songs, five more of Montgomery's singles have reached the top of the country charts: "I Love the Way You Love Me", "Be My Baby Tonight", "If You've Got Love", "I Can Love You Like That", and "The Little Girl", while thirteen more have reached Top Ten. Montgomery's recordings of "I Swear" and "I Can Love You Like That" were both released concurrently with R&B versions by the group All-4-One. Montgomery has also released eleven studio albums, counting a Christmas album.
John Michael joined the family band (which also included his brother, Eddie Montgomery, who would later join Troy Gentry in the duo Montgomery Gentry) as guitarist before taking the lead singing role when his parents divorced. Afterwards, he made a frugal living on the local honky-tonk scene as a solo artist playing what he referred to as "working man's country." Eventually, Atlantic Records signed him.

He gets to hold her
The way I know I never will again
They're dancing close with her head on his shoulder
Lucky arms, lucky heart, lucky him
They don't see me standing in these shadows
She don't know how bad my heart still aches
Sure is making good off my mistake
He's got lucky arms
He gets to hold her
The way I know I never will again
They're dancing close with her head on his shoulder
Lucky arms, lucky heart, lucky him
Before too long the music will stop playing
He'll take her hand and then he'll take her home
I can just imagine what he's saying
The way he's smiling I can tell he knows
He's got lucky arms
He gets to hold her
The way I know I never will again
They're dancing close with her head on his shoulder
Lucky arms, lucky heart, lucky him
Lucky arms, lucky heart
He oughta thank his lucky stars
Lucky arms, lucky heart, lucky him
The song "Lucky Arms" by John Michael Montgomery tells a story of a man who is not able to let go of a woman he once loved. He sees her in the arms of another man, dancing close with her head on his shoulder, and he realizes that he will never hold her that way again. The man is standing in the shadows, watching them dance, and thinking about the mistake he made by letting her go. He knows that the other man is lucky to have her in his arms and to have her heart.
The lyrics are packed with emotions, and the use of repetition adds a sense of urgency and longing to the song. The melody is slow and sad, enhancing the melancholic mood. The metaphors of "lucky arms" and "lucky heart" highlight the man's jealousy and bitterness towards the other man who has won the heart of the woman he loves. The song is a powerful expression of heartbreak and regret.
