Out Of My Head
John Newman Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Living in a broken home alone
16 weeks since you've been gone
As time goes by there's no pieces left
No memories of you & me

To shut out feeling lonely; I get out of my head
Lost everything around me
Not dealing with it well
To shut out feeling lonely; I get out of my head
Why would you want to love somebody when love hurts in the end?

Free to see the world now as my own
Sleep with any woman that I want
But anytime anyone gets close
Breaks through my mind, what I have lost

To shut out feeling lonely; I get out of my head
Lost everything around me
Not dealing with it well
To shut out feeling lonely; I get out of my head
Why would you want to love somebody when love hurts in the end?

You called to say you're missing me, but never ask how I feel
I'm beaten, I'm broke
I'm out of my mind, but learning to get on by fine

To shut out being lonely; I get out of my head
Lost everything around me
Not dealing with it well

To shut out being lonely; I get out of my head
Why would you want to love somebody when love hurts in the end?

Overall Meaning

In John Newman's song "Out of My Head," the lyrics reveal the aftermath of a failed relationship. The singer is living in a broken home alone, sixteen weeks since their partner has left. As time goes by, there are no memories left of the former couple. The singer copes with the loneliness by distracting himself and getting out of his head. He sleeps with any woman he wants and travels the world. However, whenever anyone gets too close to him emotionally, his thoughts turn to what he has lost.

Despite being the one who left, the ex-partner calls to say that they miss the singer but never asks how they are feeling. The singer is struggling, feeling beaten, broke, and out of their mind but is learning to move on by themselves. The song goes on to suggest that love hurts in the end, asking why anyone would want to love somebody.

Overall, the lyrics of "Out of My Head" show how the end of a relationship can make someone feel lost and broken. The singer tries to escape the pain, but it still lingers in their mind. The song portrays the struggle of moving on after losing someone, even when it was not a healthy relationship.

I heard this a few days ago on Capital Xtra, a black station that I'm a huge fan of. I could not believe this song . Just blew my mind clean away. I always just missed the title and artist until this morning. OMG what a production, those drums!!! Now I'm on the internet every chance I get listening to this man with this beautiful smoky voice. Wow, I had no idea white boys were so talented, I hope he does well and produces lots more like this. The drums just make  this more awesome, and remind me of the ones in ''Alive'' (Chase and Status}.  These two songs are my most favourite right now. Big up yourself  Mr John, you are the man!!!.
