Cuttin' the Tree
John Wesley Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If it bleeds, would you tighten the tourniquet
or would you stare at the open wound
with lust and fascination

If the cut runs deep, would you reach
inside of it
or would you twist the knife in tight
with lust and fascination

You've got me out on the limb now baby,
would you be cuttin' the tree.
you've got the wool in my eyes now
honey so blind I can't see
are you settin your sights now baby,
are you settin' on me.
You've got me out on the limb now baby,
would you be cuttin' the tree
would you be cuttin' the tree
would you

If I sleep
would you come inside of it
would you steal all my dreams of life
with lust and fascination

If I scream
would you kill to silence it
like stealing the words of a drowning man
with lust and fascination

You've got me out on the limb now baby,
would you be cuttin' the tree.
You've got the wool in my eyes no
honey so blind I can't see.
are you settin your sights now baby
are you settin on me.
You've got me out on the limb now baby,
would you be cuttin' the tree

would you be cuttin' the tree, would you
be cuttin' the tree.

Overall Meaning

These lyrics are about vulnerability and trust in a relationship. The first two verses describe a hypothetical scenario in which a person is wounded, either physically or emotionally, and their partner's reaction to that. The singer wonders if their partner will try to help them by tightening a tourniquet or reaching inside the wound to help, or if they will simply be fascinated by the sight of blood and enjoy causing pain by twisting the knife in deeper. The third and fourth verses are more personal, with the singer asking if their partner would cut the tree they're both standing on, causing them to fall, or steal their dreams by taking advantage of their vulnerability while they're sleeping. Overall, the lyrics suggest that the singer is unsure of their partner's true intentions and whether they can be trusted with their vulnerability and well-being.
