The Last Light
John Wesley Lyrics

Stars set in as the last light runs
Something dark had befallen here
And what it is ain't exactly clear
And we whisper and we pray for this to go away
Stars light your eyes in an emerald fire
The only witness as this night transpires
We reach for the light that's beyond the door
Is there something to be said to make this go away
Can't we just hold on to us to make this go away
I don't want you to leave I don't want you to go
I give you the last light in my eyes
And the last light inside of my soul
I don't want you to leave I don't want you to go
Words clench the air like an iron vice
And shows no mercy in exacting it's price
But I've got a secret that I've saved for last
We can send these sorrows back into the past
Is there something to be said to make this go away
Can't you look into my eyes and make this go away
I don't want you to leave I don't want you to go
I give you the last light in my eyes
And the last light inside of my soul
Take this gift from me
Take this gift and you'll know
I give you the last light in my eyes
and the last light inside of my soul
I son't want you to leave I don't want you to go
I don't want you to leave I don't want you to go
In these lyrics, the singer and another person sit together in the darkness of night as the stars begin to appear. They are both aware of something ominous that has happened or is happening, but they do not speak of it explicitly. Instead, they whisper and pray for it to go away. The darkness is described as something they have never experienced before, and they long for the light that's beyond the door.
As the two of them face the dark, the singer declares that they don't want their companion to leave. They offer the last bit of light within them, in their eyes and soul, as a gift to the other person. They cling to the hope that by sharing this light, they might make the darkness disappear. The singer also mentions a secret that they have saved for last - they can "send these sorrows back into the past." They wonder if there is anything they can say or do to make the darkness go away, but they ultimately offer the last light as an act of love and hope.
