Something I noticed in this song. You can see the moment that Sweeney Todd goes from sympathetic anti-hero seeking revenge to omnicidal maniac. We all know that Sweeney is out to kill The Judge, and now his enemy sits before him in the chair, rather defenseless. Before this, Sweeney starts singing somewhat of a reprise to the song My Friends, and begins to sharpen the blade. Now, as we watch Sweeney raise his blade and arm, we await the slashing of The Judge's throat. However, this part never comes. Instead, Sweeney gently glides over the shaving cream, and continues to sing Pretty Women to The Judge. It's just so brilliant and so bone chilling that you realize that you had been holding your breath ever since you saw Sweeney raise the blade.

This is such a gorgeous song. They did a great job performing this song. Alan's voice is such a gorgeous baritone and Johnny's is such a pure tenor. The melody and the harmonies are just luscious. Probably my favourite song in the whole film. Just the whole idea of this song. From my perspective I see a broken man singing with the man responsible for his life falling apart, but both singing about the same woman. Lucy. Turpin, having the chance to be killed by Sweeney at any moment, remains oblivious to Sweeney's true identity and doesn't realise both are singing about the same woman.

Just with every song you can go so deep into the film and what they're thinking while singing. Really amazes me.

It's weird how stories evolve over time, Sweeney Todd was originally written as an outright villain, a barber who murdered his patrons and sold them for meat in Mrs Lovett's pies. It wasn't until the 1970's that the character was re-imagined as an anti-hero who had a reason for his crimes. Between the 70's and now, aided by Tim Burton's movie, he evolved into something more like a folk hero. That's a complete character reversal, he went from a villain we were meant to despise and revile, to a sympathetic character we sympathise with and regard as a hero of folk legend. as to the story itself, taking into account that Sweeney Todd appeared in Penny Dreadful magazines in the late 19th century, the Stephen Sondheim musical appeared in 1979, it could well be that the harry Potter series was written by a fan of Sweeney Todd. I have no proof, mind you, but the HP stories do get pretty dark towards the end (Avada Kadevra, Sectumsempra, etc)

As much as I like his performance I think the movie misses the character a bit.
The reason a lot of people like depp more is because he has a sort of suave to him that no other performer brought to the role.
I kinda like the Broadway sweeneys better because (in my opinion) his character is supposed to be almost repulsive at least originally.
Nothing against the movie but they changed things that I sorta have a love hate relationship with

This is probably Tim Burton's most beautiful movie when it comes to gothic stories.
With Edward Scissorhands, there was still humor with the beautiful story. Sweeney Todd has no humor and seems to rely on the tragedy of Todd's character. The music is either melancholy with violins playing/a sweet harp/flutes or angry with drums and ominous French horns. I do love how they take care of making the music beautiful which in turn makes the film feel more elegant despite the general tone of it.

Indeed. What do you mean no humor? I was smirking half of the movie and loudly exhaled though my nose at least ten times with scenes like the roach on the table, the itchy wig on the kid, how he directed his own wife to act out the Mrs Lovett admitting to not using cats in her pies because "them pussycats is quick" scene, etc. And that's just the originals. When we also add the jokes from the source material... It turns hilarious. This is a dark comedy, but a comedy none the less. Like most of the best Burton movies are.

@@LongandWeirdName I feel like since the movie is about a man who is set on revenge, it's a serious movie because of Todd's pain. It's the reason behind the whole movie..he thinks the love of his life is dead, he can't find his daughter, he's angry at the man who took away the life he had.
Todd doesn't smile unless it's to use someone for his benefit or to kill them. He's a character that embodies pain and vengeance..and since he is the main character, there's not much comedy as I think people believe.

This was a masterfully done scene, how you know how brutal Sweeney Todd can be will make you think this will be the end and so when the music hypes up you think the judge is going to be killed only for the music to calm down, its tension done simply yet effectively.

So Edward Scissorhands eventually got hands and learn to become a barber but was sent away by Severus Snape. So while Edward is away he becomes into a great pirate known as Jack Sparrow. When he returns with Anthony he adopts the persona of Sweeny Todd. Sweeny kills Snape and uses Tobey to fake his death. Once everyone thinks he's dead he adopts a new persona called Willy Wonka, and goes on to be successful with candy.
