Living My Songs
Johnny T Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Five hundred stars light up the sky
Fire flying towards them on the fourth of July
Lying on a cold deck eyes being told the prettiest lies
Sleeping, sleeping, sleeping with time

Oh, ew oh, ew oh
There's a song in my
He-e-e-e-ead
And it doesn't sound right
Without you
Oh, ew oh, ew oh
There's a strut in my
St-e-e-e-ep
And it doesn't feel right
Without you

Two-hundred miles my headlights will glow
Until there's nothing on this moonlit road
Arrive when your sleeping eyes say your dreaming
With socks on your toes
Tell me, just tell me, tell me how it goes

Oh, ew oh, ew oh
There's a song in my
He-e-e-e-ead
And it doesn't sound right
Without you
Oh, ew oh, ew oh
There's a strut in my
St-e-e-e-ep
And it doesn't feel right
Without you

Your soul can take me so many places
The monkeys in the trees are jealous of me
I can't pay for the morning paper
But I can read you some poetry
Your soul can take me so many places
Religious guarantees won't ever take me
I can make ya pancakes with cocos
Early in the morning when your bodies slowly searching
For me
Searching for me
For me-e-e-e
Searching for me

Oh, ew oh, ew oh
There's a song in my
He-e-e-e-ead
And it doesn't sound right
Without you
Oh, ew oh, ew oh
There's a strut in my
St-e-e-e-ep

And it doesn't feel right
Without you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Johnny T's "Living My Songs" describe the singer's restless and wandering lifestyle, seeking adventure and chasing dreams. The first verse references a Fourth of July celebration with fireworks and lies told by someone who the singer seemingly trusted. The second verse talks about driving two hundred miles on a moonlit road to be with someone who is sleeping, but the singer can't help but wonder how their relationship really stands. The bridge touches on the singer's desire to share experiences with this person, their love for them and their ability to take the singer to many new places without any religious guarantees. The chorus repeats throughout the song, emphasizing the singer's discomfort in living this way without their loved one, as if they are incomplete without them.

Overall, the lyrics convey a sense of yearning and uncertainty in the singer's life, longing for some sense of stability and connection. The use of imagery and sensory language, such as the fireworks and moonlit road, creates an almost dreamlike atmosphere, as if the singer is wandering through life in a haze. The repetition of the chorus adds to this sense of longing, as if the singer is trying to convince themselves that they can keep going without their loved one, but it never quite feels right.

As a New Yorker, I can verify that everything in this video is 100% accurate. Except for that homeless man standing inside the apartment next to your bed.

I've heard New Yorkers say there's two versions of New York: the one you see in movies and TV and then there's real one. The one on TV is usually some American city paradise, while the real one is more like this video. But New Yorkers still love it.

Despite what people think, and Hollywood portrays, New Yorkers are fantastic people. That's why they stay.
