Keeps on Pilin' Up
Jonas Brothers Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
When they brought me home it rained
My Momma tried to throw a party
Not a single person came
It wasn't because no one liked us
Daddy just forgot to pay
For the men to come and fix the plumbing
The house was flooded but it wasn't the rain
'Cause it all comes out of the woodwork
But things are looking down and rough
And all the dirty laundry that you don't wanna wash
Just keeps on pilin' up
My lady used to call me sweetheart
But now it's all bittersweet
We never used to think that we'd part
And now she's packin' up to leave
But I'll rather be single
'Cause I know my dog will stick with me
I haven't seen him 'round since last week
Should have never let him off his leash, yeah
When it all comes out of the woodwork
But things are looking down and rough
And all the dirty laundry that you don't wanna wash
Just keeps on pilin' up
Guitar
Now I'm getting old and grumpy
My hair is turning thin and grey
I wouldn't say that I'll be lucky
I just had a couple careful days
'Cause it all comes out of the woodwork
But things are looking down and rough
Oh, all the dirty laundry that you don't wanna wash
Just keeps on pilin' up
'Cause it all comes out of the woodwork
But things are looking down and rough
And all the dirty laundry that you don't wanna wash
Just keeps on
It keeps on pilin' up
Oh, watch it fill all up now
Yeah
The Jonas Brothers' song "Keeps on Pilin' Up" tells the story of a series of unfortunate events and the feeling of being overwhelmed by life's challenges. The lyrics begin with the singer reflecting on the day they were born, which was marked by clouds and rain. The singer's mother tries to throw a party, but no one attends, possibly due to financial difficulties that prevented the father from hiring help to fix their flooded house. This sets the stage for the recurring theme of things going wrong.
The song then shifts to the singer's romantic relationship, which has become bitter and strained. The once endearing pet name of "sweetheart" has become bittersweet as the couple faces the reality of parting ways. However, the singer finds solace in their dog, expressing a preference for being single and relying on the loyal companionship of their pet. The mention of not seeing the dog since last week highlights a sense of loss and possibly a lack of control over certain aspects of their life.
As the song progresses, the lyrics suggest that time has passed, and the singer is getting older and less optimistic. The mention of thinning gray hair and not expecting luck implies a weariness that comes with age. Despite this, the challenges and burdens of life continue to accumulate, symbolized by the image of dirty laundry piling up. The repetition of the line "it keeps on pilin' up" in the final chorus emphasizes the feeling of overwhelming adversity that seems to persist.
Overall, "Keeps on Pilin' Up" explores themes of disappointment, hardship, and the weight of life's challenges. It highlights the idea that even when things seem to be going wrong, they can keep getting worse, leaving the singer feeling overwhelmed and unsure of how to handle it all.
