All Through the Day
Joni James Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I sit alone in the golden daylight,
But all I see is a silver sky;
For in my fancy I sweep away light,
And keep my image of the sky,
Just the way we like it, you and I.

All through the day I dream about the night,
I dream about the night, Here with you.
All through the day I wish away the time,
Until the time when I'm here with you.

Down falls the sun, I run to meet you,
The evening mist melts away;

Down smiles the moon, And soon your lips recall
The kiss I dreamed of all through the day.

Overall Meaning

In Joni James's song "All Through the Day," the lyrics paint a vivid picture of a longing and yearning for a loved one. The song conveys a sense of longing and anticipation for a reunion. The singer expresses their solitude in the "golden daylight," where they feel alone despite the beauty around them. The mention of the "silver sky" suggests a contrast between the external reality and the singer's imaginative world.

The lyrics further reveal the singer's daydreaming nature, where they escape into their fantasies and create an idealized version of the sky that they share with their loved one. This shared vision creates a sense of unity and connection between the singer and their partner. The line "Just the way we like it, you and I" emphasizes the intimacy and mutual understanding in their relationship.

Throughout the song, there is a repeated motif of yearning for the night and being together. The singer confesses that they constantly dream about the night and eagerly await the moment when they can finally be with their loved one. There is a sense of impatience as they wish away the time until their reunion.

With the setting of the sun, the singer is filled with excitement and rushes to meet their partner. The evening mist dissipates, symbolizing the obstacles and distance being cleared away. The descending moon brings forth memories and emotions, and the singer's lips recall the long-awaited kiss that they had dreamed about all through the day.

Obviously, John, "100 Strings and Joni" was an exquisite album. Thanks to your excellent notes, I now know that she recorded this in London during here extended performance at the London Palladium in 1959. I also appreciate learning of the song's pedigree, having been composed by Kern and Hammerstein for "Centennial Summer."
