Simply because you're near me.
Funny, but when you're near me
I'm in the mood for love.
Heaven is in your eyes
Bright as the stars we're under
Oh! Is it any wonder
Why stop to think of whether
This little dream might fade?
We've put our hearts together
Now we are one, I'm not afraid!
If there's a cloud above
If it should rain we'll let it
But for tonight, forget it!
I'm in the mood for love
These lyrics convey the emotional state of being in love and how it affects one's mood. The singer is expressing how simply being near their beloved puts them in the mood for love, suggesting that the presence of their beloved brings them joy and happiness. The singer describes their beloved's eyes as being bright as the stars, which highlights the sense of wonder and awe they feel towards this person. This intensified emotional state leads to the singer being in the mood for love.
The lyrics also suggest that the singer is not concerned with the uncertainties that may come with being in a relationship, as they have already committed to the idea of being together with their beloved. The final verse, where the singer suggests letting the rain fall but forgetting about it for the night, supports the idea that the singer is focused on living in the present and enjoying the moment with their beloved.
Overall, these lyrics capture the feeling of being in love and how it can affect one's outlook in life. They express the joy and wonder of being around someone special and the abandoning of worries and focusing on the present.

One of my favorite songs. Thank you Joni for all the wonderful songs over the years. I loved you in 1955 and I still love you now.

The unforgettable Joni James.

Joni recorded "Am I In Love" again six years later at Abbey Road Studios in London with a gigantic string orchestra but it went unreleased. Both she and Tony were surprised the single only made the top 20. They felt it had the potential to become #1. I always thought the problem was play being split with the flip, "Maybe Next Time." With total sales being figured, rather than individual sides, as was the custom, it would have been #1.

First time I hear this. No surprise, I was born in 1966 and in Belgium, so... I'm going through a stack of Joni James singles I bought a few years ago, just started with two previous releases from 1953. For sure it's beautiful, elegant and all that, but until now, all these songs are in the same super-romantic dreamy mood. Not the Patti Page formula, with on one side a pre rock song and on the other side a ballad. A second remark is: although her voice is technically very good for sure, it also sounds a bit "teenage-ish". She rather sounds like a girl than like a young woman of 24 she actually was. So, though I gave the first record a VG mention, I gave the second and this one a +/- VG one.

No, it wasn't a rerecording on the album. The single was take two. When M-G-M added "Am I In Love" to the expanded "Let There Be Love" album the engineers could not find take two so they used take one, which was taken at a slower pace. There was a take three but that disappeared too. I have the studio dub of the original single and the dub has much better quality than the released M-G-M single! "Maybe Next Time" and "In A Garden of Roses" were also recorded at this session, and another song.
