Second Guessing
Jonny Lang Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
There you go again
Rushing off in all directions
Since I don't know when
All day long you're building walls
You're building walls all day
Putting ceilings on your feelings
When they should fly away
Don't you think it's time you quit it
Don't you think it's time you admit it
Your heart is more worthy of trust
Than the thoughts in your mind that sit there gathering dust
Everything you're looking for
You'll know when it's real
You'll know when you've found it
By the way you feel
Writing down your deepest emotions
With your pen in hand
Your piece of paper flew out the window
You watched it try and land
You felt bad as it flew out of sight
A part of your heart alone in the night
All of a sudden you didn't mind it
When you pictured that lonely stranger that would find it
Everything you're looking for
You'll know when it's real
You'll know when you've found it
By the way it makes you feel
The lyrics of the song "Second Guessing" by Jonny Lang speak of a person who struggles with committing to their emotions and trusting their heart. The first verse talks about this person's habit of rushing off in different directions and building walls all day, putting ceilings on their feelings. This implies that they tend to keep their emotions bottled up and not express themselves fully, which can hinder meaningful connections in their life. The chorus urges this person to stop second-guessing their first impressions and to trust their heart. The lyrics suggest that the heart is more trustworthy than the thoughts in the mind, which often sit there accumulating dust.
In the second verse, the song talks about this person's habit of writing down their deepest emotions but not being able to let them go. The piece of paper with their emotions flies out the window, and they feel bad as a part of their heart is lost in the night. However, a sudden acceptance comes over them as they picture the lonely stranger who would find it. This can be seen as the person coming to terms with the idea that sometimes it's better to let go and trust that things will work out in their own way.

Back in 1998, I drove from Vegas to St George, Utah. Found this CD in Utah and blasted it continuously in my new Jaguar with the sunroof open, what a thrill! Man, I truly love his music!

One of my favorites... seen this kid 3 times in concert. Can`t wait to see him again. He put`s all his heart and soul into every song he sings.(excellent guitar player as well,...unique style all his own) Sounds like a big black man singing the blues ... then you see this skinny barefoot white boy on stage. Love the two guitars synching up for the intro on this one... well written tune sweet as it gets. If you haven`t seen Johnny Lang live GO. You won`t be let down and you`ll be back for more.
