Time to Pretend
Jonsi Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm feeling rough, I'm feeling raw, on the prime of my life
Let's make some music, some money, some wine
I'll move to Paris, the heroin on a star
You'll man the island, the cocaine and the car

This is our decision, live fast, die young
We've got a vision, now let's have some fun
Yes, it's overwhelming, but what can we do
Get jobs, wake up, commute

Forget about our mothers and our friends
We're fated to pretend
We're fated to pretend

I'll miss the playgrounds, the animals and worms
I'll miss the comfort of my mother and the world
I'll miss my sister and my father, my dog
I'll miss the boredom, the freedom, alone

There is nothing, nothing we can do
Love forgotten, life will start anew
Models, children, we'll divorce
We'll find more, everything runs its course

We'll choke on our vomit and that will be the end
We're fated to pretend
We're fated to pretend
We're fated to pretend

Fated to... pretend

Fated to... pretend
Fated to... pretend

Overall Meaning

Jónsi's "Time to Pretend" is a melancholic reflection on the idea of fast success and its consequences. The lyrics describe the lead singer feeling "rough" and "raw" at the peak of his life, contemplating the possibilities of making music, money, and wine. He envisions himself moving to Paris to indulge in heroin while his partner "mans the island" with cocaine and a car. They have a vision to "live fast, die young," and have fun. However, it is overwhelming, and they feel that getting a job and commuting is not for them. They decide to forget about their families and friends and pretend to be someone they're not. They are fated to live this way and choke on their vomit, which will be the end for them.

The song's lyrics reflect the recklessness and nihilism young people may feel when facing the future. The line, "Yes, it's overwhelming, but what can we do/Get jobs, wake up, commute," shows that the societal expectations of success are not for them. They choose to live in the moment and pretend to be someone they're not, even though they know it will not end well for them. They also express nostalgia for their past, missing their childhood and family, but acknowledge that everything runs its course.

In conclusion, "Time to Pretend" is a poignant reflection on the consequences of reckless living and the fear of societal expectations. The lyrics paint a picture of youth caught between their desires and what society expects of them.

I'm surprised by the number of people who aren't big fans of this cover; I think it's really original and well done. I love hearing a stripped down song where you really get Jonsi's vocals as the star of the show. That being said, I think a set of strings backing this would also be amazing, there are a few parts where I think some cello would rock especially because it would be a nice contrast to his high register

This is insane, he captures the message of the song perfectly, and delivers it in a much eerier and morose way than mgmt did, great cover

I don't think people realize that Jónsi is a very original singer and therefore his cover isn't going to be a cookie cutter version of the original song. Both musicians are great in their own right, Jónsi with his lovely lyrical singing style and MGMT with their impeccable lyrics.

I've never heard the original song, but this is stunningly beautiful to me.

Love this cover too. I actually don't take this song to be advocating for rock stars to throw away their life on drugs. What I think is cool is that the song acknowledges that a lot of rock stars do get messed up on drugs and caught up in that kind of a lifestyle because they don't see much of an alternative. To me the song is saying that the rock lifestyle can actually be pretty sad. Which is a moving thing to say... especially with Jonsi singing :)

I love all of you for loving Jonsi! Please never stop loving! <333 This man gives way too much soul into his music to go unrecognized.

Go vegan, for life.

this man is living proof that music is still alive and well.

Combining two of my favorite artists?! Goodness, the Universe loves me.

If you neglect the fact that he skips some lyrics, then it's a great cover. Just pretend he's singing hopelandic. After all, Jonsi doesn't like to limit the meaning of the music he does to what the lyrics say; usually he likes to keep interpretation open to the listener. He took a good song, an applied his own style to it. Personally, I love this cover, as well as the rest of Jonsi & Sigur Ros's songs.

What a rare talent, a voice of beauty for the ages.
