Think
Jools Holland Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Broken windows and empty hallways
A pale dead moon in the sky streaked with gray
Human kindness is overflowing
And I think it's going to rain today

Scarecrows dressed in the latest styles
With frozen smiles to chase love away
Human kindness is overflowing
And I think it's going to rain today

Lonely, lonely
Tin can at my feet
Think I'll kick it down the street
That's the way to treat a friend

Bright before me the signs implore me
To help the needy and show them the way

Human kindness is overflowing
And I think it's going to rain today

Overall Meaning

The first two lines of the song 'Broken windows and empty hallways, a pale dead moon in the sky streaked with grey' create the mood of desolation and despair. The use of 'broken windows' and 'empty hallways' symbolizes an abandoned place. It could be a deserted building, a town, or even a heart. The 'pale dead moon' with 'gray streaks' adds a touch of hopelessness and depression to the picture.

However, the following lines 'Human kindness is overflowing, and I think it's going to rain today' deliver a ray of hope. The sense of contrast between the negativity and positivity in the first two lines and these lines shows that even in the most desolate conditions, there is still hope for humanity. The rain serves as a symbol of new life and new beginnings. It cleanses and renews everything it touches.

The final verse, 'Bright before me the signs implore me, to help the needy and show them the way, human kindness is overflowing, and I think it's going to rain today' highlights the significance of showing kindness and empathy to others, especially those who are marginalized. It suggests that by reaching out to these people and showing them compassion, we can make positive changes not only in their lives but also in our own lives.

Hello amazing fan.
It has come to my notice that some of my fans thinks I was the person who died. Late jones was The one who conceived the twist on Romeo and Juliet with composer John Donald Robb.
He died 11th August, of cancer in his home in Sharon.
I’m still alive and much healthy.
Thanks dear fan..

@jebeins1

He played with this song on "Red, White and Blues" and recorded it with Jools in 2004. I've been waiting to hear it pop up in concert! Thank you Sir Tom and Jools and your orchestra!!!

Tom Jones is perhaps the last of the great interpreters and privileged voices who sang any kind of song that fell into his hands. He transformed them into something different, in addition to having a great personality.
