He comes from a Jewish family that fled persecution in Germany. He studied to become an otolaryngologyst (i.e., ear, throat, and nose doctor) like his parents but ultimately chose to pursue his passion for music.
Drexler made his full-length album debut with La Luz Que Sabe Robar (1992), followed by Radar (1994). In hopes of furthering his career, he went to Spain in 1995 upon the invitation of legendary singer/songwriter Joaquín Sabina , who showed him around the Madrid music scene and helped him secure an international recording contract. So impressed with Madrid that he chose to make his permanent residency there, Drexler got together with a band of Spanish musicians to re-record material from his first two albums along with new material and release it internationally as Vaivén (1996), the first of four albums on Virgin España. The highlights of Vaivén along with those of its three follow-ups, Llueve (1998), Frontera (1999), and Sea (2001), were later compiled on the best-of compilation La Edad Del Cielo (2004).
Upon his switch to the Dro Atlántic label, Drexler's career reached new heights of success with the critically acclaimed Eco (2004). Most notably, the album includes the Oscar-winning song ''Al Otro Lado Del Río'', which was prominently featured during the closing credits of the Walter Salles film The Motorcycle Diaries (2004).
Eco proved so successful, in fact, that it was re-released with bonus material as Eco² (2005). Subsequent albums include 12 Segundos de Oscuridad (2006), the double-disc live album Cara B (2008), and Amar la Trama (2010).

Murga Reggae
Con la luna brillando en el mar
Murga Reggae
Con mi amor yo quiero bailar
Murga Reggae
Con la luna brillando en el mar
Se va, se va el expreso
Bombo, platillo y tambor
Se fue, se fue para Jamaica
Este Marcha Camión
Si te vas, yo quiero, mi amor
Que me lleves
Pero si te quedas, mucho mejor
Murga Reggae
Para tí yo puedo cantar
Murga Reggae
Corazón llevando el compás
Murga Reggae
Se fue, se fue febrero
Se terminó Carnaval
Se fue el verano a otro tablado
Y yo no pude parar
(Una lluvia de estrellas
De estrellas de mar
Bajaría del cielo
Por verte bailar
Murga Reggae)
In Jorge Drexler's song "Murga Reggae," the singer expresses his desire to dance with his beloved to the beat of murga, a traditional dance originating from Uruguay, mixed with reggae. He sets the scene with a serene night, a shimmering moon, and the sound of drums and tambourines. The first stanza repeats the chorus of the song, highlighting the importance of dancing with his lover to this genre of music.
In the second verse, Drexler sings about the "Marcha Camión" (Truck March), which is a type of song played during carnival parades in Uruguay. He refers to the drums, cymbals, and bass drum that create the powerful rhythm and energy of the song. He mentions that the Marcha Camión has gone to Jamaica, a country famous for reggae music, which influences the rhythm of the Murga Reggae.
In the final verse, the singer notes the end of the carnival season and summer, but he still desires to dance the Murga Reggae with his love. He also includes a beautiful metaphor, imagining a rain of starfish falling from the sky as he watches his love dance to the rhythm of the Murga Reggae.
Overall, the lyrics of "Murga Reggae" capture the joy and passion of dancing with someone you love to a unique blend of traditional and modern music.
