Long Black Train
Josh Turner Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's a long black train
Coming down the line
Feeding off the souls that are lost and crying
Rails of sin only evil remains
Watch out brother for that long black train

Look to the heavens
You can look to the skies
You can find redemption
Staring back into your eyes
There is protection and there's peace the same
Burnin' your ticket for that long black train

'Cause there's victory in the Lord, I say
Victory in the Lord
Cling to the Father and His holy name
And don't go riding on that long black train

There's an engineer on that long black train
Making you wonder if the ride is worth the pain
He's just a waitin' on your heart to say
Let me ride on that long black train

But you know there's victory in the Lord, I say
Victory in the Lord
Cling to the Father and his holy name
And don't go riding on that long black train

Well, I can hear the whistle from a mile away
It sounds so good
But I must stay away
That train is a beauty making everybody stare
But its only destination is the middle of nowhere

But you know there's victory in the Lord, I say
Victory in the Lord
Cling to the Father and His holy name
And don't go riding on that long black train

I said cling to the Father and His holy name
And don't go ridin' on that long black train

Yeah, watch out brother for that long black train
That devil's a drivin' that long black train

The song encourages listeners to cling to God and his holy name for safety and protection from sin.

The imagery of a train in the song is used symbolically to represent sin, temptation, and the devil. The train's color, black, is often associated with darkness, evil, and corruption. I was born with autism, I've been struggling sometimes, But now that I've heard this song, I know there's always victory in God, because he loves everyone, no matter what, autism or not, he loves everyone, Thank you for giving us this important message Josh Turner!

This was the first song I ever sang in public for the church we were going to at the time. I got brave and asked the pastor if I could perform it before the service and he said yes. When we went to church that Sunday we had standing room only and a friend told me that they heard I was going to sing that train song as he put it. I was scared to death to sing it but got a standing applause for my performance. Quite a few people asked to be baptized because of that song. I feel that the Lord used me for that purpose that day and I'm glad I did.
