He has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras under such conductors as Charles Dutoit. A master of the classical repertoire, Bell has expanded his career to contemporary music and genres such as folk and jazz. He has won Grammy Awards and an Academy Award for his work with John Corgliano on The Red Violin.
Bell was born on December 9, 1967 in Bloomington, Indiana. He studied under Josef Gingold as a child and at Indiana University. Since appearing with Riccardo Muti and the Philadelphia Orchestra at age fourteen, Bell has become a classical music superstar. In addition to his violin performances, he has begun to pursue a career as a composer and conductor. Bell has written cadenzas for the violin concertos of Mendelssohn, Beethoven, Brahms and Mozart. He plays the 1713 Gibson ex Huberman Stradivarius.

I listened to this beautiful performance with my mother while she was very poorly with pancreatic cancer in hospital. We had both watched Ladies in Lavender together and just loved this solo. Sadly my mother died over Easter. This music will always hold a special place in my heart and will always remind me of my darling mother.

We also listened to Joshua Bell playing Ladies in Lavender whilst we took it in turns sitting with our Mother on her last few days in hospital. It was one of her favorite pieces and we hoped she was still be able to enjoy it. Although my father struggles to remember recent events - it clearly reminds him of those last few days - in a positive way.

That is exactly how it makes me feel also. I went to see Ladies in Lavender at the movies and I was the only one still sitting there right to the end of the credits while this was playing.
Joshua has a Stradivarius violin and I have heard other great performers playing this but they don’t have any where near the depth and the beautiful soulful sound that Joshua and that amazing old violin can make together.
It touches my soul.

Just watched the movie a little while ago and as soon as I heard this piece at the ending credits I had to find out what song it was and who was playing it. I'm not usually so enthralled with a classical piece, but this one moved me so much I just had to know. The violin just "weeps" in this music, it is absolutely beautiful -- almost takes on a human voice. Just love it, and now love Joshua Bell and his humility and gift as well.
