Overall Meaning

The song "Confrontation" by Jr. Gong is a political and socially charged commentary about the state of the world, people's suffering and the battle to overcome oppression. The song begins with a speech in Ethiopian by Haile Selassie followed by a dialogue from Bunny Wailer, reflecting on the conflict of wars and how humanity must find a way towards peace. The verses continue with references to innocent lives lost in propaganda-fueled wars, where the youth's lives are gambled like racehorses. Also mentioned is the fact that the church is trying to save the saviors, and this point refers to the idea that people who should be helping and guiding others are instead caught up in the conflict.

Later, the song shifts to a more personal narrative, with Damian Marley rapping about individuals struggling to survive in a world where even basic necessities like gas, weed, and the right to procreate are being taken away by conflicts, like war. There are references to violence, death, and the general loss of human life during times of war. Garvey's dialogue reinforces the message that if we cannot do what other races have done, we race the risk of dying. Hence we must stand up for what is right and fight for our freedom.

Since the beginning of modern civilization/ generations have witnessed and inherited the only conflicts of world wars/ but behold the marriage supper of the lamb and the bridegroom onto his bride/ then shall the earth's children know the true epression of ONE LOVE, then mother earth shall honeymoon in peace.
Throughout history, the only conflicts that humanity has ever experienced are wars. They have been passed down through generations. However, there is hope for a better future in which humanity's children will finally know and understand true love and peace.

Forever eliminating the aspirations, lust and anguish of wars and rumors of wars...SELAH!
The prospect of a peaceful world where there will be no need to wage war, and there will be no rumors of war or conflict-causing aspirations, lust or anguish

See it deh know the innocent going up in vapors and/ propoganda spreading inna the sunday papers not even superman coulda save you with him cape cause/ Red-a judgement a blaze, blaze, ya/ and Babylon a gamble the youth dem life like racehourse/ and gi dem a uniform and shave dem head with razors/ and now the clock a strike war, don't be amazed cause/ inna dem churches tryin to save...saviours/
Innocent people are losing their lives like smoke in the air due to violence, and propaganda is being spread in newspapers. This is a serious issue, to the extent that even Superman cannot stop it. Judgment day is fast approaching, and the youth's lives are being gambled away like racehorses. Their heads are being shaved, and they are being given uniforms, which is not okay. The current state of the church is also not helping the situation.

Garvey Dialogue: Can we do it? We can do it, we shall do it!/
Marcus Garvey aims to inspire a sense of confidence and hope in people who are doubtful about the possibility of achieving their goals.

Damian Marley: Boom, tell dem fe uh draw mi out when the world government inna falling out/ only few men survive crawling out/ run lef him collegues dem sprawling out/ NEARLY DEAD!/ medic haffi haul him out/ and give him two tranquilizer fi stall him out/ DEH PON BASE! / can't get no calling out when him hear from the shout last week/ him mistress find a new shoes/ wife can't get no news and lately she starting to doubt/ SHE STILL SEARCHING!/ and the youth dem bawling out/ working hard not to let it all come out/ well it's not safe to go walk about/ a slaughter house from Bagdad to Waterhouse/ she start arouse/ sometime she want a spouse/ she start go out/ start beat a darker stout/ GUNS COME OUT!/ working people funds run out/ keep a show last week and no one come out/ BOMBS COME OUT! / mi gas tank just run out/ BOMBO CLAATT! / the scotch tape just run out/ WEED RUN OUT! / yuh senses must dumb out/ mi have a pound round a back deh a gwan sun out/ NAH COME OUT! / till the chalice bun out/ NAH COME OUT! /till the malice bun out/ A WAR!
People are struggling through wars and trying to survive, and those who emerge from it are often traumatized. They have suffered so much and still have little hope for their future. In addition, financial hardship is making it almost impossible for most people to survive. Poverty is ubiquitous, further fueling war and conflict and making life harder for everyone.

Zimbabwe to Berlin wall, blazin like a burningball/loose ball....dat no work...IN WAR, sleepin...dat now work...IN WAR/ can't wear jheri curl...IN WAR, no diamond and pearl. ..IN WAR/ can't drink weh a serve. ..IN BAR, gas we fuck up yuh nerves. ..IN WAR/ shot wi' blood up yuh shirt. ..IN WAR, can't go lift up no skirt. ..IN WAR/ now disease and germs. ..IN WAR, can't go release your sperms. ..IN WAR/ stamina must preserve. ..IN WAR, fire constantly burn. ..IN WAR/ RED...IT RED...IT RED...IT RED...IT RED.
Wars create difficult conditions that are challenging for the average citizen to live in. You cannot have the privileges or luxuries of life as usual, with no access to clean water, sleep, safe food, alcohol, or sex. You may experience physical hardship, disease, and illness. And despite all this, you must maintain your fighting spirit to survive the war.

Garvey: if you cannot do it, if you are not prepared to do it...then you will die. You race of cowards, you race of imbosiles, you race of good for nothings, if you cannot do what other men have done, what other nations have done, what other races have done, then you yourself shall die.
If you are not willing, or unable, to stand up and fight for what is right during difficult times, you will not succeed and will perish like a coward. It is important to learn from history and what others have done to defend their rights and their people. Otherwise, your race will suffer.

Despite the struggles of past generations, the current generation is still motivated to fight for its rights and the truth. They recognize the injustices present in society and are working hard to change this reality. Those in power who abuse their authority are coming to realize that they cannot continue to do so with impunity. Therefore, change must and will come.

The war has spread far and wide, causing famine and drought. Even the church, which is supposed to be a place of peace, is part of the problem and has fallen prey to the destruction caused by the war. Everyone has been affected by it, even animals, which is not how things should be. So, this war should be instantly stopped.
