You
Judas Priest Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

So many years that we were one
So many things we've done
The memories alive
But most of me has died

As I struggle with events
I'm offered words of strength
They do not comprehend
The passion we possessed

People tell me what to do
Tell me how I should get through
But they haven't got a clue
No one else comes close to you

I see your eyes before they closed
They looked right inside my soul
And they asked me not to grieve
I tried but still I bleed

I wake up, I break up
Try hard to shake off
The desolation as it grows
As nothing else comes close

And as I stand here by the grave
And the wind calls out your name
I know that time could never heal
The emptiness I feel

People try to give me hope
Tell me how I should let go
But they'll never really know
'Cause there's nothing else comes close

People tell me what to do
Tell me how I should get through

But they haven't got a clue
No one else comes close to you

Overall Meaning

The song "You" by Judas Priest is a mournful ballad depicting the pain of losing someone dear. The lyrics describe the singer's struggle to cope with the memories and feelings that he shared with the person who has left him. The singer reminisces about the times he shared with his loved one, stating how they were one entity and how much they did together. The memories are still alive, although the singer admits that most of him has died, referring to the emotional state he is in since the loss.

The singer goes on to say that he has struggled to come to terms with the loss and continues to be offered condolences, but those that offer them do not comprehend the deep passion and connection that he once shared with his beloved. He laments how people keep telling him what to do, how to get through the difficult time, but they have no idea what he is going through, and no one else comes close to his departed love. He vividly remembers his loved one's last moments and the last look in their eyes, which he claims looked right inside his soul asking him not to grieve. But, try as he might, he still bleeds with pain and desolation.

As the song progresses, the singer stands by the grave and hears the wind calling out the departed person's name, and he realizes that time cannot heal the emptiness he feels. People try to give him hope, telling him how to let go, but they have no idea of the depth of the love he shared with his beloved. The song concludes with the singer stating that no one else comes close to his departed love, and there is nothing else that can fill the void that their loss created.

One life, I'm gonna live it up
I'm takin' flight, I said, I'll never get enough
Stand tall, I'm young and kinda proud
I'm on the top as long as the music's loud

If you think I'll sit around as the world goes by
You're thinkin' like a fool 'cause it's a case of do or die
Out there is a fortune waitin' to be had
You think I'll let it go you're mad
You've got another thing comin'

That's right, here's where the talkin' ends
Well, listen this night there'll be some action spent
Drive hard, I'm callin' all the shots
I got an ace card comin' down on the rocks

If you think I'll sit around while you chip away my brain
Listen, I ain't foolin' and you'd better think again
Out there is a fortune waitin' to be had
You think I'll let it go you're mad
You got another thing comin'

(bridge)
In this world we're livin' in, we have our share of sorrow
Answer now is don't give in aim for a new tomorrow

Oh, so hot no time to take a rest, yeah
Act tough, ain't room for second best
Real strong, got me some security
Hey, I'm a big smash, I'm goin' for infinity, yeah

If you think, I'll sit around as the world goes by
You're thinkin' like a fool 'cause it's a case of do or die
Out there is a fortune waitin' to be had
You think I'll let it go you're mad
You've got another thing comin'
