Roberts began performing country music as a child. When she was in junior high and high school, she toured with her family, playing at festivals in North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. She also performed at area nursing homes (where she developed an appreciation for blues music); and worked at Carowinds (a theme park in Charlotte, North Carolina) and Dollywood.
A graduate of Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee, Roberts began working for Mercury Records, later becoming assistant to label head Luke Lewis. During her tenure there, she began perfecting her singing skills and recorded a demo tape. Producer Brent Rowan liked what he heard and invited Lewis to hear the tape. Lewis liked what he heard, but it was only after he asked for the singer's identity that he learned it was Roberts.
Roberts was signed to Mercury Records, and her self-titled album was released in 2004.
A second album for Mercury, Men & Mascara, followed in 2006. This album produced two non-charting singles in its title track and a cover of Saving Jane's "Girl Next Door".
Her influences include Dolly Parton, Barbara Mandrell and Tanya Tucker.
I'm Not Getting Any Better At Goodbyes

Just outside some closing door
Standing here just searching for a light
You'd think by now I'd have it down
I know I should be wiser now
'Cause no one's gonna bail me out this time
I'm not getting any better at goodbyes
It hurts every bit as much as it did way back then
I suppose I'll cry a lot the only thing for sure is
I'm not getting any better at goodbye
Friends may come and friends may go
But lover's memories die so slow
They won't always let you know it's time
But even this shall pass I guess
And you'll do just like all the rest
And I'll start dusting off all my best lines
Oh, I'm not getting any better at goodbyes
I'm not any better now than when I first began
It hurts every bit as much as it did way back then
I suppose I'll cry a lot, the only thing for sure is
I'm not getting any better at goodbye
Oh, I'm not getting any better at goodbye
The lyrics of Julie Roberts’s song, “I'm Not Getting Any Better At Goodbyes” is an emotional account of someone who has been in a constant cycle of saying goodbye. The opening line, “Seems like I've been here before, Just outside some closing door” highlights the familiarity and monotony of the situation. The singer of the song is struggling to come to terms with goodbyes, as she feels that she should have mastered the emotions that come with it by now. The lines “I know I should be wiser now, 'Cause no one's gonna bail me out this time” imply that she is aware of the consequences of her actions and the impact that goodbyes have on her life. However, she still finds herself unable to handle it.
Roberts goes on to say that despite the experience, she is not getting any better at goodbyes. The lines “It hurts every bit as much as it did way back then, I suppose I'll cry a lot, the only thing for sure is, I'm not getting any better at goodbye” highlight the fact that goodbyes are a continuous process, and every time it happens, it hurts as much as the first time. The singer realizes that friends may come and go, but the memories of a lover linger on for much longer.
Overall, the song is a poignant reminder that no matter how much we may try, saying goodbye never gets any easier. It also highlights the importance of acknowledging and taking responsibility for our emotions.
