Roberts began performing country music as a child. When she was in junior high and high school, she toured with her family, playing at festivals in North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. She also performed at area nursing homes (where she developed an appreciation for blues music); and worked at Carowinds (a theme park in Charlotte, North Carolina) and Dollywood.
A graduate of Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee, Roberts began working for Mercury Records, later becoming assistant to label head Luke Lewis. During her tenure there, she began perfecting her singing skills and recorded a demo tape. Producer Brent Rowan liked what he heard and invited Lewis to hear the tape. Lewis liked what he heard, but it was only after he asked for the singer's identity that he learned it was Roberts.
Roberts was signed to Mercury Records, and her self-titled album was released in 2004.
A second album for Mercury, Men & Mascara, followed in 2006. This album produced two non-charting singles in its title track and a cover of Saving Jane's "Girl Next Door".
Her influences include Dolly Parton, Barbara Mandrell and Tanya Tucker.
Keep Me Up All Night

Keep me up all night
A full moon through my window shining
A little too bright
Baby, remember what it's like
Keep me up all night
Be my alley dog barking at the breeze
Sometimes a lack of shut eye
Is just what a body needs
Baby remember what it's like
Keep me up all night
Let's Outrun the sandman
Forget about the time
Cast that old spell on me
Just by looking at my eyes
We'll light a little fire
And watch the sparks fly
We may be a little sleepy
Come the sunrise
Oh, remember what it's like
Keep me up all night
Be my summer church tent revival
Lead me back to the light
Let the spirit move us, Hallelujah
When we get it right
I swear by tomorrow morning, I won't mind
Keep me up all night
Let's Outrun the sandman
Forget about the time
Cast that old spell on me
Just by looking at my eyes
We'll light a little fire
And watch the sparks fly
We may be a little sleepy
Come the sunrise
Oh, remember what it's like
Keep me up all night
In Julie Roberts’s song Keep Me Up All Night, the singer requests her partner to remain awake with her and keep her preoccupied with their love. She compares her lover to a pot of brewed coffee that keeps her awake and a full moon shining through her window that keeps her distracted. The singer wants to distance herself from a lack of sleep, to keep up all night with her lover, because sometimes lack of sleep offers an opportunity for a night of romance. She reminisces on the adventures of teenage relationships that kept her up all night and would like to relive those moments to experience an intimate relationship again.
The lyrics have a deep meaning behind them as they discuss the desire to enjoy every moment with a loved one and to relive the moments of young love again. The lyrics communicate the message that old relationships tend to die out, but the memories of the passionate moments stay forever. At the same time, the lyrics also show how powerful love can be, as it has the power to keep people awake at night, both physically and mentally. It is an authentic love song that finely depicts the different aspects of love.
