In 1989, Silveira left Salvador for São Paulo and now lives in Rio de Janeiro. Jussara's rendition for Caetano Veloso's "Dama do Cassino" (included in the compilation CD “Elas Cantam Caetano”) was included in the soundtrack of the soap opera “Irmãos Coragem” and reached the Top Ten on Brazilian radio.
Winning the “Copene de Cultura e Arte Prize” in 1996, Silveira recorded her first independent CD, Jussara Silveira. Extremely well received by critics, the album launched her recording career. The album was re-released in the next year by Dubas Music label.
Her second album, Canções de Caymmi, was also praised by critics. On this work, Jussara, backed by some of the best musicians in Brazil, balances some of the most widely known Caymmi's hits with less successful compositions, which also have superior musical qualities, like the haunting, mysterious "O Vento."
In her next album Jussara gives a voice to emerging composers and also explores little-known pieces by veterans such as Chico Buarque, Jorge Ben Jor, and Tom Zé.
Both Nobreza and Entre o amor e o mar were released by Maianga Discos in 2006. Nobreza is the result of her musical partnership whith Luiz Brazil presenting a sophisticated voice-and-guitar duet. Entre o amor e o mar is a record rich in songs about love and the sea.
In 2009, the independent label Biscoito fino/Quitanda released the DVD/CD Tres meninas do Brasil - a special project that presents Jussara Silveira with Rita Ribeiro and Teresa Cristina, directed by the well-known Brazilian musician Jaime Alem, who has been Maria Bethânia partner for 2 decades.
Caravela
Jussara Silveira Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Isso que eu já não queria
Fruto de uma saudade
Ou qualquer emoção vazia
Vivo, então, nessa prisão
Cheia de melancolia
Dentro do meu coração
Minha caravela à linda luz no do mar
Amanhece o dia, te espero chegar
Minha caravela à linda luz do mar
Espero um novo dia pra te ver voltar
Entre o medo e a ambição
Vaga minha poesia
Perde-se na imensidão
Oceano em calmaria
Quero te avistar de longe
Minha estrela-guia
Para saber de onde sou
Venha me buscar
Minha caravela à linda luz do mar
Amanhece o dia, eu te espero chegar
Minha caravela à linda luz do mar
Espero um novo dia pra te ver voltar
The lyrics of Jussara Silveira's song Caravela are filled with emotions of love, longing, and hope. The first verse opens with the singer expressing disbelief, stating that what she is feeling is not true and that it's not something she wanted. She believes it's a result of her sadness or any empty emotion. The next verse talks about the singer feeling trapped in a world full of melancholy, but she finds solace in her heart, which is inclined towards the sea. She refers to her heart as her caravel, a metaphor for the ship or vessel which takes her to the vast sea.
The chorus emphasizes her hope and optimism, as she waits for her love, who is referred to as her star. She sings about the beauty of the sea and how she looks forward to a new day, hoping that it brings back her love to her. The last verse is about the singer's poetic inclinations, where she talks about losing herself in the vastness of the ocean. Her desire is to see her love from afar, and she hopes that he will arrive and take her away.
Caravela is a song that touches upon themes of love, hope, and the beauty of the sea. It speaks about the longing and desire that we all feel for that one person who can brighten up our world. The song is slow-paced, and the music is a perfect complement to the melancholic mood of the lyrics.
