Sitting Targets
K-Group/Peter Hammill Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We can talk about it in the car;
We can talk about it with the drive.
Keep your eyes on the road up ahead,
(Don't forget what we said about)
Staying alive.
If we'd been stuck just a few hours more
I'd have cracked up, I'd say.
No you never can tell when it's coming;
It's so hard getting out of the way;
To be sitting targets is surely
No better than running away...
Sitting targets in the car
I'll be thinking about it;
Not so far, no so far to drive.
Ooh, this time we made our getaway,
We'd been stalling for too long.
Keep your eyes on the road up ahead
While I try to forget what's been going wrong
(What's been going on...)
You'd better check up on the CB,
See what Tail - End Charlie say -
"Oh you never can tell how it's going,
No you never can see how it's been,
But to stay sitting targets is surely
No better than living a dream."
Sitting targets in the car
I've been thinking it over,
It's not so far, not so far to drive.
In the car...
We can talk about it in the car,
Surely we can talk about it some other time.
Keep your eyes on the road up ahead -
I don't seem to be able to use mine
And I'm losing control of my body
And I'm running scared...
Oh, we're left with a black-and-white movie,
A positional state of affairs,
An obsessional interest in moving
Just to prove that we're there,
Sitting targets in the car.
I'll be thinking about it, not so far to drive
Sitting targets in the car,
I've been thinking it over, it's

Not so far, not so far,
Not too far to drive.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Sitting Targets" by K-Group/Peter Hammill tell the story of a couple driving in a car, talking about the dangers of being "sitting targets" and the importance of staying alert and ready to move quickly. The song takes the listener on a journey of anxiety and fear, as the couple realizes that they are potentially in danger and could become a victim if they do not remain vigilant. The lyrics are also filled with references to the importance of taking action and staying focused, even in the face of danger.

The first two stanzas of the song set the stage for the listener, as the couple talks about their plans to stay alive while on the road. They discuss the need to stay alert and focused, especially in the face of the unknown. The third stanza takes a darker turn, as the couple realizes that they might not be able to avoid danger, even if they try. The final stanza brings the song full circle, as the couple resigns themselves to living with the danger and trying to stay alive, even as they continue down the road.

Overall, "Sitting Targets" is a haunting and evocative song that captures the anxiety and fear of living in a world where danger could be just around the corner. It is a reminder that we must stay alert and make the most of every moment, even when the odds seem against us.

this song is so great. the new wave, post-punkish feel works really well with Hammill's style of songwriting.

I was there- magnificent and very powerful concert! Met Nic Potter and Guy Evans between soundcheck and concert....I´m a big fan of VdGG and Peter Hammill

meraviglioso concerto . il k group ,un momento magico della carriera di Peter Hammill

AlbertoVO5

The short lived K group was a great moment in Hammill's and the other band members careers. Ballsy and tight. Nic Potter and Guy Evans are an orchestra of a rhythm section. Also, even though live pH always seems like he's struggling with his instruments he rarely errs. Amazing.

One of my favorite Hammill tracks...it’s a lot more intense here than on the album.

Margin is very simmilar.

Excellent.. Peter Hammill always feels like he's on the edge of things, like he's about to lose it but then somehow he lands on his feet and everything seems to work...

Philip Ferguson

I know that's John Ellis with him on guitar and the drummer looks like Guy and, yikes, that looks like Nic Potter on bass. I like how Hammill had this close/tight little band of VDGG people he played with almost always. And Ellis was a good choice because of the punk thing.

The core of this band backed Hendrix at The Royal Albert Hall 12 years earlier
