Skin
KITCHEN - Oingo Boingo Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

This is someone else's story
Someone that I never knew
This is someone else's body
Am I getting through to you
If you peel away the armor is something underneath
If you look below for hidden treasure underneath another layer
Are you hiding underneath the skin
CHORUS

If you peel away the skin is there anybody there
If you peel away the skin is there anybody there
If you peel away the armor is it too late to begin
Is there anybody hiding if you peel away the skin

Now a spark has passed between us now
A momentary recognition
Something lost and something gained
And something shared that feels strange
Something cold that will not go away

There's a heart as cold as ice
In a vault that's made of stone
Over years the walls got higher
Over years the walls have grown

Is there anybody in there in this self inflicted tomb
If you peel away the layers is there someone in this room
If you peel away the skin, if you peel away the skin

This is someone else's story
Someone that I never knew

This is someone else's body
Am I getting through to you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Oingo Boingo's song "Skin" tell a story of self-discovery and the search for authenticity beneath the surface. The singer begins by acknowledging that the story being told is not their own, reflecting on the unfamiliarity of someone else's experiences and body. The line "Am I getting through to you" suggests a longing for connection, as if the singer is trying to bridge the gap between their own identity and that of another.

The chorus delves into the theme of peeling away the layers and armor that people often put on to protect themselves. It questions if anyone truly exists beneath the surface and if it's too late to embark on a genuine journey of self-discovery. The repetition of "If you peel away the skin is there anybody there" emphasizes the desire to find something real and genuine beneath the facade that people often present to the world.

The second verse introduces a moment of connection between the singer and someone else. There is a recognition and shared experience, yet there is also a sense of something strange and cold that lingers. The heart is described as cold as ice, symbolizing emotional detachment, while the vault made of stone represents the walls and barriers that have been constructed over time.

The line "Is there anybody in there in this self-inflicted tomb" further explores the idea of personal isolation and being trapped by one's own defenses. It suggests that there might be someone hiding within this self-imposed prison if one is willing to peel away the layers and truly face oneself.

In essence, the song "Skin" explores the search for true identity and the longing for connection. It questions the authenticity of the personas people present to the world and encourages introspection and self-discovery. It invites listeners to consider what lies beneath their own protective layers and to recognize the potential for genuine human connection if they are willing to peel away the surface and truly see themselves and others.

Saving the dragon form for the more impactful scene was the better choice. Just like the improved character designs.

its disney stupid decision, now blue sky no longer with disney anymore

@tristanmilner9511

@@joshuagraham2843 huh? Blue Sky never was with Disney, they worked with Fox.
Besides, it's an adaptation of a novel, not a 1:1 copy. Changes always occur with book to film projects.

Disney didn’t have a hand in the final product at all. That’s the whole reason why Nimona being ‘resurrected’ by Netflix is such a big deal. Disney rejected the concept and it turned out to be a huge success

@574guy

What's funnier is that, from what I've heard, Disney rejected Nimona because the main character being gay was an important detail that couldn't just be swept away, and they don't like promoting "that type of content".

@rubenperezalonso8726

@@574guyoh so they are mega woke, but then do shit like this? Damn, why am I not surprised. Wait, didn't Lightyear have a gay couple in it? Or am I remembering it wrong?

@574guy

@@rubenperezalonso8726 What I'm saying is that for Nemona, the gay relationship was important to the STORY: it was a big part of Ballister and Ambrosius's struggles and character growth because they were love interests that were put at odds against each other throughout the movie.
From what I recall, the gay relationship in Lightyear wasn't nearly as important to that movie's story, which meant Disney could limit their representation without hurting the impact of the plot.
