Material Girl
KMFDM Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Some boys kiss me
Some boys hug me
I think they're ok
If they don't give me proper credit
I just walk away

They can beg and they can plead
But they can't see the light (that's right)
'Cause the boy with the cold hard cash
Is always Mister Right

'Cause we are living in a material world
And I am a material girl
You know that we are living in a material world
And I am a material girl

Some boys romance
Some boys slow dance
That's all right with me
If they can't raise my interest then I
Have to let them be

Some boys try and some boys lie but
I don't let them play (no way)
Only boys who save their pennies
Make my rainy day

'Cause we're living in a material world
And I am a material girl
You know that we are living in a material world
And I am a material girl
Living in a material world
And I am a material girl
You know that we are living in a material world
And I am a material girl

Living in a material world (material)
Living in a material world
Living in a material world (material)
Living in a material world

Boys may come and boys may go
And that's all right you see
Experience has made me rich
And now they're after me

'Cause everybody's living in a material world
And I am a material girl
You know that we are living in a material world
And I am a material girl
Living in a material world
And I am a material girl
You know that we are living in a material world
And I am a material girl

A material, a material, a material, a material world

Living in a material world (material)
Living in a material world
Living in a material world (material)
Living in a material world

Living in a material world (material)
Living in a material world

Living in a material world (material)
Living in a material worl

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to KMFDM's song "Material Girl" speak to the idea of living in a material world, where people are judged based on their possessions and the amount of money they have. Madonna's original song with the same title had similar themes, but KMFDM's rendition focuses more on the struggle to find true love and genuine relationships amidst the shallowness of consumer culture. The song is about a woman who knows her worth and values herself more than any man who offers her gifts or tries to win her over with superficial charm. She recognizes that money cannot buy love or happiness and is not willing to settle for less than what she deserves.

The lyrics also point out the hypocrisy and greed of some men who try to take advantage of women by using their wealth as a means of control. The woman in the song refuses to play into their game and walks away from any situation where she is not respected or valued. The repetition of the phrase "living in a material world" emphasizes the idea that this is a pervasive issue that affects everyone, and that we need to be aware of the ways in which we may be perpetuating it in our own lives.

I like the understated, ethereal, hushed, echoing delivery of lyrics in between the choruses & musical refrains.

Welp I just shared the story of how this song came to be. Cuz I helped the band pick it out & was there when it was recorded. The band is actually really nice & I had a lot of fun working with them… in fact it was life changing cuz we got to have discussions about religion & Buddhism. Anyhow this was supposed to be anti-materialistic message cuz when they toured here they couldn’t understand America’s obsession with materialism & thought it was the wrong message to be sending little girls. I had to go download the lyric sheet just prior to recording. Come check out my Growing Up in Rock N Roll series where I discuss how some songs came to be, legendary shows, & all the crazy wild stuff that goes along with the rock n roll life. Anyhow sending my love to the band.
