Kaizers Orchestra - Di Grind

Lyrics written by Janove Ottesen.

Ta denne ringen. Sett han på din fing
Kommer do til himmelen går do rett inn
Men en ting, bare en liten ting
do er ikkje død, do er fortsatt min

Klapp dine hender. Klapp en siste gong
Tramp ditt trebein på golv av betong
Klokkene ringer, de ringer deg inn
Kom på mi side av di grind

Reis deg opp og kall deg for en mann
Nok er nok do snakker løgn, eg snakker sant
Om do har et siste ord før do drar
så spar de til do kommer ner til din far

Klapp dine hender
og kom på mi side av di grind der

From the album "Evig Pint",
released February 3rd 2003.

Overall Meaning

Kaizers Orchestra's song Di grind is a hauntingly beautiful work that is composed of dark and painful themes. The song is written in Norwegian by Janove Ottesen, and it is one of the standout tracks from the album "Evig Pint," which was released on February 3rd, 2003. The lyrics of the song are centered around death and mourning, but they are not despairing or hopeless. Instead, they offer a sense of acceptance and even defiance in the face of mortality.

The opening lines of the song speak of a ring that, when worn, will grant the wearer entrance to heaven. The verses following that line suggest that the wearer of the ring is not dead, but rather, still alive and present with the singer. This creates a sense of uncertainty and mystery about the nature of the relationship between the two characters in the song. The chorus, which is repeated several times throughout the song, speaks of the need to cross over to the singer's side of the "grind," a reference to the gate that separates the living from the dead.

The second verse of the song is a powerful call to action for the listener. It speaks of the need to be strong and truthful, to stand up and be a "man" in the face of life's difficulties. The final lines of the verse suggest that the listener should save their final words for when they have passed on and are reunited with their ancestors.

Overall, Di grind is a complex and nuanced work that speaks of the fear, sadness, and hope that come with facing mortality. The song's elegant melodies and powerful lyrics have made it a beloved piece of music for fans of Kaizers Orchestra, and it continues to be a haunting reminder of the impermanence of life.

This is among the most influential songs in my life, and Kaizers Orchestra is likely the most influential music group in my life.
The lyrics of this song has helped me realise much meaning in life.
“Kommer du til himmlen går du rett inn” says to me that if one reaches heaven, they go straight in and rightfully so.
“du er ikkje død, du er fortsatt min”, this line encourage me to mind the idea that you are not gone in what we call “death”. Of course I trust all sensations would cease and also the mental abilities, memories, emotions, but this happens in accordance with what we then are. “Death” is yet the end of our character.. but it is part of our character.
“Reis deg opp og kall deg for enn man” - Arise and proclaim yourself in truth and liberty.
“nok er nok, du snakker løgn; eg snakker sant” - Time is enough, just perception of the ‘self’ is verifiably complete; all else incomplete and a sort of lie.
“Om du har et siste ord før du drar, så spar det til du kommer ner til din far” - No more speaking for the sake of speaking, save the words for only they who truly should hear them, keep them for when the situation and time when your mindsets allow them to be really understood.

“Klapp dine hender, klapp enn siste gong” - Go for what makes right. Do right now, a final and forever impactful time.
“Tramp dit trebein på golv av betong” - crush the shell to unlock its fruit. Tolerate and practice the terribly unpleasant in respect of its necessity for meaningful powerful change.

I know Kaizers Orchestra tells fictional stories and fantasy tales with their songs. I’ve just found personal meanings to their lyrics, maybe to help me cope with something psychological. I think all philosophical problems should be equally understood as the result of psychological factors, or as biological stuff. It’s something of the natural world in any case.

I was their too. I went absolutely crazy when they played "Di Grind". Jeg havde lige sagt til dem jeg var dernede "Det kunne være mega fedt, hvis de spillede Di Grind", også begyndte den.
