After releasing a demo in 1995, their first release was the self-titled EP Kampfar, by Season of Mist in 1996 followed by full length Mellom skogkledde aaser by Malicious Records in 1997. Being a studio band, without spending time on live shows or tours and with no intentions to slow down they released another EP Norse in 1998, and full length Fra underverdenen in 1999 both on Hammerheart Records. Then there were 7 years of studio silence although they began to play their first live shows in 2004.
Signing to Napalm records, they released three full length albums on that label: Kvass (2006), Heimgang (2008), & Mare (2011). All were well received by critics and listeners alike. Thus completed their contract with Napalm.
Their next releases were two singles leading up to their sixth full length album, 2014's Djevelmakt released by Indie Recordings.

Lyktemenn
Kampfar Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Lyktemenn går
Lyktemenn farer
Over skog
Likbålet brenner
Blått og iskaldt
Under daudmålets sødme
Farer det dødshyl
Luktemenn går
Lyktemenn farer
Over skog
Negler og hår
Angst og magi
Svette og blod
Død og magi
Raspende negler
Blod og magi
Raspende stemmer
Hyl og magi
Likhalmen brenner
Ild og magi
Negler og hår
Angst og magi
Raspende negler
Blod og magi
Raspende stemmer
Hyl og magi
The song "Lyktemenn" by Kampfar is a dark yet captivating composition that delves into the realm of death and the supernatural. The lyrics depict the eerie dance of the "lyktemenn" or "lamplighters" as they travel through a forest, carrying with them the stench of decay and the foreboding presence of death. The image of a burning pyre adds to the ominous atmosphere of the song, as the blue flames evoke a sense of coldness and finality. The howling of the "dødshyl" or "death scream" only serves to intensify the haunting mood of the song.
There is a sense of unease and unease in the lyrics, as the imagery of nails, hair, sweat and blood create an atmosphere of physical turmoil and anxiety. The use of the words "magi" or "magic" also brings an element of the supernatural and the unknown, evoking a sense of fear and danger. The song's repetition of certain phrases and images underscores its dark message, making it a potent exploration of death and the afterlife.
