After releasing a demo in 1995, their first release was the self-titled EP Kampfar, by Season of Mist in 1996 followed by full length Mellom skogkledde aaser by Malicious Records in 1997. Being a studio band, without spending time on live shows or tours and with no intentions to slow down they released another EP Norse in 1998, and full length Fra underverdenen in 1999 both on Hammerheart Records. Then there were 7 years of studio silence although they began to play their first live shows in 2004.
Signing to Napalm records, they released three full length albums on that label: Kvass (2006), Heimgang (2008), & Mare (2011). All were well received by critics and listeners alike. Thus completed their contract with Napalm.
Their next releases were two singles leading up to their sixth full length album, 2014's Djevelmakt released by Indie Recordings.

Skogens Dyp
Kampfar Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Jagende inn i grønn idyll
Inn i stiens dype mørke
Jagende av den sorte magi
Snublende føtter som farer forbi.
Inn i skogens gjemte dyp.
Grønne blader og tvinnende tre
Piskende slag av greiner og bark
Pisking og svik
Bank på ukristent vis.
Inn i skogens dyp
Inn i skogens mørke.
Inn i stiens dyp
Inn kald og gryntende.
Skogens dype larm brøler
Stillheten brøler.
Isende blått
Dunkelt og grått
Sugende myr
Dreper all kraft
Isende blått
Dunkelt og grått.
Inn i skogens dyp.
The lyrics in Kampfar's "Skogens Dyp" describe the allure and danger of the forest. The first line translates to "Wild dances led by playful legs," which sets the tone for the rest of the song. The singer is being drawn into the deep and dark forest by its mysterious and seductive power. However, as they continue deeper into the woods, the singer begins to feel the weight of the forest's dangerous magic. Their feet stumble and rush past them, indicating an urgency to escape its grasp.
The forest is portrayed as both beautiful and hostile at the same time. The green foliage and twisting trees are contrasted with the whipping branches and rough tree bark. The forest is described as having a "black magic" which evokes a sense of dark and uncanny energy that is potent and unpredictable. The chorus repeats the line "Inn i skogens dyp" which translates to "Into the depths of the forest," further emphasizing the eerie and haunting nature of the woods.
