After releasing a demo in 1995, their first release was the self-titled EP Kampfar, by Season of Mist in 1996 followed by full length Mellom skogkledde aaser by Malicious Records in 1997. Being a studio band, without spending time on live shows or tours and with no intentions to slow down they released another EP Norse in 1998, and full length Fra underverdenen in 1999 both on Hammerheart Records. Then there were 7 years of studio silence although they began to play their first live shows in 2004.
Signing to Napalm records, they released three full length albums on that label: Kvass (2006), Heimgang (2008), & Mare (2011). All were well received by critics and listeners alike. Thus completed their contract with Napalm.
Their next releases were two singles leading up to their sixth full length album, 2014's Djevelmakt released by Indie Recordings.

Kampfar Lyrics

Over blanke egger strømmet det blod
Før kjøttet ble fortaert av haermenn i blodige brynjer
Jeg taler om drapet i dunkle ord
I blodig stavn seilte langskip ut
I de iskalde bølgedrag
Rødskjaeret varslet ufred
Vaapnene dømte i fiendtlig møte
Hett brant hatet i aapen kamp
I nattemørket blir makten større
The lyrics of Kampfar's song Valdogg speak of revenge for the slaying of "freenders." The blood of those who had been killed flowed over the shining blades of swords in the battle. The bodies were devoured by the warriors in bloody armor. The song describes these events in dark words, and the poet-speaker talks about the killings in a tone that suggests a strange sense of pride.
The longships carrying the warriors set sail amidst the cold waves, and the red glow in the sky indicated the coming of war. In the hostile combat, weapons were the judges, and the time for revenge had come. The poet-speaker glorifies the fighting and joy that the sight of dead friends brings to the ravens and eagles. The dead lay inert, and the wounds inflicted during the battle proved fatal for those enemies who fell beneath the feet of the victors. The desire for revenge blazed brightly, and the horns shone high in the sky, marking the symbol of victory. The livid, lifeless hands that once wielded swords and axes were now icicles, frosty in the night, sprinkled by the blood of Valdogg. The power of the victors grew with each passing moment.
