She is from the town of Kita in western Mali. The town is known for love songs, which is the largest part of Kouyaté's repertoire. She also sings praise songs.
Kouyaté's career began in the early 1980s, when she began using female choral vocals accompanying her. This practice was later picked up by stars like Mory Kante and Salif Keita, and is now an integral part of Malian music. Her debut solo album is Kita Kan.
Kandia Kouyaté suffered a stroke in late 2004, and it is speculated that she will not be able to record or perform again.

Je voyais ma mère écouter cette chanson tout le temps et chaque fois qu’elle l’écoutait elle se mettait à pleurer. Peut être que ça lui rappelait sa mère qu’elle venait de perdre a l’époque. Salut quand j'écoute cette chanson,mes larmes 😢 sans que je m'en rentre compte car,elle me fait penser à ma mère assa kouyate celle à qui j'ai dit un jour maman le jour mon 1er salaire de fonctionnaire tombe,je t'acheterai une voiture dans laquelle tu iras à la mosquée 🕌 et même aller dans les cérémonies sans gêne.Mais le bon Dieu n'a pas exécuté cette demande.Dieu est grand je ferai de tout mon possible pour faire beaucoup de sacrifices pour que tu puisses en bénéficier dans ta tombe.Que Dieu ait pitié de vous.
