She was born, on 10 August 1978, in Brussels, Belgium, to a South African diplomat, and grew up there and in Johannesburg.
She released her solo album, "Poles Apart", through EMI in June 2001, which was an instant success. She captured the imagination of the South African youth, especially Afrikaners for whom she revamped old folk songs into modern rock hits. Even the press started referring to the "Zoid Generation", and her icon status was highlighted in 2004 by both Time Magazine and U.S. News & World Report. Her second album, "Chasing the Sun", was released in June 2003, also under EMI. Both these albums have achieved Gold Record status.
In 2004, Zoid married former band member Don Reineke, with whom she had a son in January 2007. The couple later divorced in 2010.

Small Room
Karen Zoid Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
We know that
That we'll have to find a way
To the closest laundromat
Well, I knew I was in a hotel room when I saw the painting on the wall
Like a scene out of a Mills & Boon, like a rip-off of a Tretchikoff
A seagull flying, a house and a tree
And I looked at you and you looked to me
And I thought to myself
Oh, I'll get stuck in a small room with you
Any day, any day now
I'll get stuck in a small room with you
Any day, any day now
How I know you
How I'd show you
Show? Shows are so many
Every different place
Place your faith in another
I'll be there to help you keep face
Well, I wish I'd say what I really mean, but the words arrange me in-between
If you could read my mind or see my soul
I'd never have to let you know
I'd never have to let you know
I'll be your friend forever, boy
Even when we act so clever, boy
I'll be your friend forever, boy
Even when we act so clever, boy
How I know you
How I'd show you
Oh, I'll get stuck in a small room with you
Any day, any day now
I'll get stuck in a small room with you
Any day, any day now
I'll get stuck in a small room with you
Any day, any day now
I'll get stuck in a small room with you
Any day, any day now
I'll get stuck in a small room with you (I'll get stuck in a small room with you)
Any day, any day now
I'll get stuck in a small room with you (I'll get stuck in a small room with you)
Any day, any day now
I'll get stuck in a small room with you (I'll get stuck in a small room with you)
(I'll get stuck in a small room with you)
Any day, any day now
I'll get stuck in a small room with you (I'll get stuck in a small room with you)
(I'll get stuck in a small room with you)
Any day, any day now
I'll get stuck in a small room with you (I'll get stuck in a small room with you)
(I'll get stuck in a small room with you)
Any day, any day now
I'll get stuck in a small room with you (I'll get stuck in, I'll get stuck in)
Any day, any day, any day now
The song "Small Room" by Karen Zoid is about being in a confined space with someone you love or care about deeply. The opening lyrics suggest that the characters are in a tight spot, with all their clothes being dirty, and needing to find a laundromat to clean them. Then, the singer describes being in a hotel room with the person they love, looking at a painting of two boats next to the sea, a seagull, a house, and a tree. The scene is seemingly beautiful, but also a bit contrived, as the painting is seen as a "rip-off of a Tretchikoff" and a "scene out of a Mills & Boon."
Despite the slightly ridiculous ambiance, the singer finds comfort in being trapped in a small room with the person they love. The repeated chorus emphasizes this sentiment, with the singer declaring their willingness to be locked in a confined space with their loved one "any day, any day now." The song ends with a statement of friendship, suggesting that the love between the characters is not necessarily romantic, but deep and meaningful nonetheless.
Overall, "Small Room" is an ode to the power of human connection and the joy found in being close to others, whether in grand or humble settings.
